The legendary Californian harmony-pop surfers THE BEACH BOYS scored their
1st number one hit in the US with earworm I GET AROUND, 60 (!) years ago today,
on 4 July 1964. It peaked at #7 in the UK.
The song had/has an unusual structure as it started
with the chorus and only featured two short verses.

7-Inch History – THE BEACH BOYS Topped The US Charts With ‘GOOD VIBRATIONS’ This Day In 1966
Great 7″ singles from the past
10 December 2022
Band: The Beach Boys
Formed in 1961
Single: Good Vibrations
B-side: Let’s Go Away for A While
Note 1: Legend goes that the song’s title was inspired
by Wilson‘s obsession with cosmic vibrations, as his mother
would tell him as a kid that dogs sometimes bark at people
in response to their ‘bad vibrations‘.
Note 2: Over 90 hours of tape was consumed for the recordings
of the good vibes, with a total cost of production estimated
to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Score: The single hit the top spot of the US charts
on 10 December 1966, 53 years ago today.
Also #1 in the UK.
Sing it, boys…

Works faster than caffeine
28 August 2022
Summer is nearing its end and I just realized that harmonies heroes and
surf-pop legends THE BEACH BOYS didn’t appear on Turn Up The Volume
so far this season.
Time to act. Here come some good vibrations with their second and
final UK numero uno. 24-carat gold earworm DO IT AGAIN topped
the British charts 54 years ago today, in 1968.

Happy 80 To Beach Boy Genius BRIAN WILSON
20 June 2022
Two days after Paul McCartney another music genius who doesn’t need
an introduction celebrates his 80th birthday. BRIAN DOUGH WILSON was
born 80 years ago in Inglewood, California.
The man with the golden ears for layers of harmonies and architect of symphonic pop orchestrations, co-founded The Beach Boys with 2 of his brothers (Carl and Dennis) and his nephew Mike Love in 1961. They were the pioneers of the surf sound. They fabricated 29 studio LPs between 1962 and 20212 (That’s Why God Made The Radio) and tons of Number One hits. Wilson’s best known compositions were/are covered by countless artists.
Between 1973 and 1982 Wilson had some severe mental problems.
He stayed in bed for most of the time and consumed drugs and alcohol
on a daily basis. He went from rehab to rehab. It took him years to recover.
I was taking some drugs and I experimented myself right out of action. … I’d sometimes go and record. But basically I just stayed in my bedroom. I was under the sheets and I watched television.
Fortunately he survived those dark years and afterward he joined the band
now and then at concerts before starting a solo career in 1988 and making
8 albums (so far). He still tours this very day.

Happy 79 To Good Vibrations Expert BRIAN WILSON
20 June 2021
Musical genius BRIAN WILSON celebrates his 79th birthday today – 20 June 2021.
An iconic singer/songwriter, most famous, as we all know, for creating that vibrant Californian pop surf sound with his monumental harmonies band THE BEACH BOYS.
But back then in the glorious sixties the rivalry with The Beatles drove him paranoid.
He left the band to take a very long vacation in his bedroom. But in the late 80s, early
90s he returned and released several solo albums and played concerts now and then.
Music is in his veins and in his DNA. Here are three (extremely difficult to choose only three ) Brian Wilson compositions to celebrate the Beach Boy‘s 79th birthday…
– SURF’S UP –
(Brian Wilson solo – 1967)
– SLOOP JOHN B –
– GOOD VIBRATIONS –
