INTERPOL Frontman PAUL BANKS Covers IGGY POP & THE STOOGES Classic ‘GIMME DANGER’

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

15 May 2025

Interpol voice/face PAUL BANKS scored the soundtrack
for Sister Midnight, a dark comedy from the British/Indian
director Karan Kandhar.

The movie takes its title from an Iggy Pop song, that opened
his 1977 solo debut longplayer. Kandhar says that Pop “was like
a breadcrumb trail I followed through the unconscious as I wrote
the film.”

Along with the instrumental compositions, Banks
also covered a couple of Pop/Stooges‘s early songs.

One of them is GIMME DANGER, a classic track
from The Stooges’ 3rd LP Raw Power (1973).

Banks: “‘Gimme Danger’ is one of my favorite Stooges songs, and ‘Sister Midnight’ I was less familiar with, but it is the titular track of a film that is feral with Stoogian grit and joy, so I was equally excited to immerse myself in it and find an interpretation that felt authentic to my voice.”

To warm up the fans, they launched a video with their smoking-hot cover of
The Stooges punk classic I WANNA BE YOUR DOG, as performed on Oct 5,
2023 at their show at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall where the group invited
George Pettit of Alexisonfire and Dead Tired on stage to go ballistic along.

TOYAH & ROBERT Search And Destroy THE STOOGES In Their Kitchen

British pop legend TOYAH WILLCOX and her beloved partner and King Crimson
guitar wizard ROBERT FRIPP are still in the kitchen at parties, for almost 4 years
now. Their weekly Sunday Lunch Cover Sessions started back in April to kill time
in that awful Covid-19 lockdown year.

What they have done since is make us laugh to tears with their both hilarious and
utterly cool performances. They already covered tons of classic songs by classic artists/bands and there is no way of stopping them. Yes, it only takes two to tango.

Yesterday they slashed and trashed The Stooges classic Search And Destroy.

Watch Fripp‘s eyes rollin’ again from left to right and back
when seeing his colorful punk wife going berserk.

Original

Still rockin’ in the free world.

Your Dog Will Never Bark The Same Again After Hearing Norwegian Darkwave EBM Act MELT MOTIF

23 February 2024

Band: MELT MOTIF
Who: Norwegian/Brazilian electro act with two albums and
subsequent remix albums in two years. Check them on Spotify.

The trio has a cover out now.

They put their hands and their synths on the 3-chords 1969 punk classic
I WANNA BE YOUR DOG
by Detroit‘s eternal raw power legends The Stooges.

Not an obvious choice. But Melt Motif‘s take is stupendous. They drenched the motherrocker of a track in their own industrial-techno bath, and the intoxicating
outcome is a zippy electro runner that works as a magnet on your senses and your
body actions.

Near-whispering, sensual vocals roll all over the groove fueled with bass riffs and
a glowing guitar fragment reminiscent of early New Order tunes. You get the feel
you’re a passenger on a buzzing speed-train feeding your lust for life appetite.

ROLLING STONE MAG Names Horrible Albums By 50 Great Artists (Turn Up The Volume Names 5)

America’s legendary music magazine ROLLING STONE revealed their list of
50 Genuinely Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists featuring artists/bands
such as The Clash, Kiss, Kanye West, R.E.M., Metallica and Neil Young.

FULL LIST HERE.

It inspired Turn Up the Volume to come up,
just from the top of the head with 5 awful ones.

Here we go.

1. ‘Human After All’ by DAFT PUNK (2005)

I never was a DP fan. Their cheap 80s disco retro resonance, their
stupidly distorted voices, no thank you. And this one was their worst.

.
2. The Great Rock And Roll Swindle by SEX PISTOLS

The Sex Pistols only made one album ‘Never Mind the Bollocks‘. Still the best punk rock LP
in my book. But this money-grabbing collection presented as the soundtrack to an awful (never-finished) movie was the late manager Malcolm Mclaren‘s pure cash-in act. Of course, anybody knew it, he in the first place (thumbs up for the title), but talking about flogging a dead horse.

.
3. ‘Metal Music Machine’ by LOU REED (1975)

No surprise but I like the idea: a big-fuck-you music industry record. I like the artwork.
I like Lou Reed a lot (actually one of my all-time fav artists) and I actually like the guts
of the person who gave his fiat to release this horrible noise LP.

Stream/don’t stream

.
4. The Car by ARCTIC MONKEYS (2022)

AM (read Alex Turner) evolved from inventive indie pop-punk revelation
to a lousy version of crooner bands like The National and the Bad Seeds.
A reeaallyy boring album.

5. The Weirdness by THE STOOGES (2007)

Why bad? It was such a disappointment (after having high expectations) when
I first heard it. It was a quick and cheap way to promote the reunion of one of the best
proto-punk bands ever. Take the money and run. As much as I love Iggy Pop, this was a (rare) low (mind you, still better than everything Blink-1982 and similar fake punk bands ever produced).

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE Cover STOOGES Classic ‘SEARCH AND DESTROY’

21 May 2022

Last week FLORENCE + THE MACHINE launched new album DANCE FEVER.

And since yesterday a deluxe edition of the longplayer has been available.
It includes acoustic versions of 4 songs from the album and one cover.

The cover is Florence Welch‘s version of The Stooges
1973 blast Search And Destroy (from the Raw Power LP).

Welch: “I was thinking about Nick Cave, I was thinking about Leonard Cohen. I was thinking about how, in some ways, although everyone undergoes huge changes, their physical bodies – especially moving through touring – have been allowed to remain unchanged and they can commit their body entirely to the stag. In the singing, I’m trying to still embody them. In the lower baritones, I’m trying to do a Leonard or a Nick or an Iggy Pop.”

Florence sounds a bit like Siouxsie Sioux here and searches not to destroy
this Stooges punk classic. Instead, she turns it into a Machine belter.

Nice one,

Turn Up The Volume’s TOP 5 Of Lust For IGGY POP LPs

1. LUST FOR LIFE – 2nd LP – August 1977

AllMusic: “Iggy managed to channel the aggressive power of his work with the Stooges
with the intelligence and perception of ‘The Idiot’, and the result was smart, funny, edgy,
and hard-rocking. ‘Lust for Life is the best album of Iggy Pop’s solo career.”

Score: 10/10

.
2. THE IDIOT – solo debut – March 1977

Pitchfork: “Where once he was infernal and freewheeling, he now became
cool and restrained by Bowie’s careful, calculated producer’s hand.”

Score: 8.5/10

.
3. THE STOOGES – the band’ debut album – August 1969

Rolling Stone: “Loud, boring, tasteless, unimaginative and childish.”
Well, they changed, like so many critics who didn’t like it when
it was released, their minds later.

4. BRICK BY BRICK – 9th album – June 1990

AllMusic: “Smart, tough, and impressive on all counts, Brick by Brick was Iggy Pop’s strongest work since Lust for Life, and marked a new high point in his career as a songwriter.”
Score: 9/10

16 November 2020

Band: THE RIDICULOUS TRIO
Who: A weirdo trio out of Chicago dedicating their lives to Iggy Pop.

Album: THE RIDICULOUS TRIO PLAYS THE STOOGES
Released: 17 July 2020

Info: “A crazed tuba & trombone reimagination of the piercing punkadelic music created
by The Stooges! Thrashing cymbals and bashing drums locked in step with unrelenting tuba riffs, reinforced by otherworldly trombone writhing and sliding and bending, sounding somewhere between a disheveled wah-wah guitar or a kazoo. Available for the first time
as a complete album, it must be heard to be believed!”

Punk Pioneers THE STOOGES Released Second Longplayer ‘FUNHOUSE’ 50 Years Ago

7 July 2020

Band: The Stooges
Active: 1967–1971, 1972–1974, 2003–201
AlbumFunhouse  – the band’s second LP
Released: 7 July 1970 – 50 years ago today

Rolling Stone wrote:  “With garage-savvy ex-Kingsmen keyboardist Don Gallucci producing their second album, the Stooges’ relentless “troglodyte groove” was allowed to run psychotically rampant. “I stick it deep inside,” Iggy Pop growls on “Loose.” And the punk torpedoes like “T.V. Eye” make good on that promise.”

Key phrase: “The passenger having fun with his lust for destruction.
Keywords: Mean punk machine, still your dog, ruinous bluster, maniacal tantrums
