PICK OF THE DAY – Melbourne’s BABY BLUE With New Mantra ‘FIRE AND ICE’…

Daily fuel load your sonic batteries…

Band: BABY BLUE
Base: Melbourne, Australia
Who: “From what began as a solo project for Rhea Caldwell, ‘Baby Blue’ quickly evolved into a rocking, rollicking four-piece spanning 60’s rock, folk, surf and pop featuring members of CB3, Coastbusters and 19th Century Strongmen. Guitarist Fabian Hunter’s joyful and elaborate fretwork complements Caldwell’s ear for melody whilst drummer Nathanael Riley’s and bassman Dave Mudie’s playful beats lock the audience’s hips’n’feet to the swinging groove.”
Track: FIRE AND ICE
Score: this mind-expanding mantra-like daydream sticks immediately. Its catchy swagger, its addictive beat, its 60s psychedelic guitars, its 8 miles high vocals and the mind-tickling sitar sound gets you in a totally different mood. Somewhere up there, in the starry-eyed sky. But, beware, it won’t last forever. It all ends in the end. Here’s FIRE AND ICE

.
I am vacant
you are vacant
dreamily vacant

tell me all of your secrets
I’ll tell you mine

Fire and Ice

We are one
but we are two
you and me
me and you

say goodbye to your future
do what you like

It all ends in the end

Fire and Ice

It all ends in the end

10 Questions For Brighton’s Blazing Blues Brothers… JUNKYARD CHOIR

Discover up and coming artists in 10 questions

Please welcome from the sparkling city of Brighton…. JUNKYARD CHOIR

Carlo Woods Estevez and Tom Herbert, one half Scottish grit, the other half Caribbean spice, are JUNKYARD CHOIR. A virile tequila blues engine, with frontman/guitarist Estevez‘s voice as impressive as the cathedral of Notre-Dame-in-Paris and hoarser than Joe Cocker and Tom Waits doing a duet together and with drummer Tom Herbert hitting his gear merciless and inexorable as if he’s beating the shit out of idiotic politicians. The crushing tandem already infiltrated my ears, back in 2015, with debut LP Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, a raw Americana blues beast. This Friday, 26 January, their second longplayer TROUBLE IN MIND will be released (listen below). An overall sultry steamroller. From massive knockouts that will dare you to smash your neighbour’s furniture to melancholic ballads, you can cry your heart out to. The record sounds and feels like if wicked wall-of-sound legend Phil Spector was in the production chair. Everything reverberates MUCH bigger as if a whole army
was hired to pump up the decibels. Mammoth riffs, huge organs, titanic drums, mighty harmonies and even LOUDER vocals. Before talking to vox Mister Estevez let’s play the towering lead track from the new LP to get us all in the right mood. Turn it up…

1 / When, how and why did the band formed?
“The band started by accident. We used to be a 3-piece for many, many years going under the ‘Junkyard Choir‘ banner. One rainy night at a gig in Croydon (South London) the bass player couldn’t make it, so we rehearsed one hour and the gig as a duo went so good that we kept going like that under the pseudonym ‘Dos Hermanos Locos’ during late 2013 and early 2014, before resurrecting the ‘Junkyard Choir’ band name in the summer of 2014
and releasing our debut album ‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie‘ in April 2015.”

2/ When did you know “this is how want we to sound, this is what we want to tell the world”?
“Our sound came when I dug deep in the fire and pulled out this old ‘Dirty rat‘ distortion pedal that someone had left me many moons before. I plugged it in and It was wild, untamed, raw. I purchased a 2nd hand octave pedal from a friend to further fill the sound without leaning on a bass player. I bring the songs in and Tom bashes them into shape and we see what sticks to the wall. Our sound has developed over the years and with the new album we’ve added some more colour and shape with some great people guesting on the album.”

3/ Why is it that Brighton is such an inspiration to form a band, as almost every week a new one is coming up on the surface?
Tom and I both moved to coastal towns east and west of Brighton, we rehearse in Brighton, we gig there. Everybody in that town is so creative, inspiring. It’s a melting pot! Bohemia! Once we left London it was a great place to go. Great venues & neon lights!”

4/ If the band was an animal, which one would it be?
“The wolf. Howling out from the mountain. We can smell a song about 2 miles
away which makes for good tracking!”

Junkyard Choir howlin’ at the moon...

5/ If brand new album ‘TROUBLE IN MIND’ was a movie, which one would it be?
Hell Or High Water, two brothers in conflict. The desert. A Chevrolet Camaro. Enough said.”

Junkyard Choir’s new album looks quite explosive

6/ What’s on the van’s stereo when driving to gigs?
“The Band, The Stones, Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Quotsa, Uncle Neil, Creedence.”

7/ Who’s your number one artist/band to go on a world tour with?
The Dead Reds. They are our blood brothers from Brighton way. Blues soaked rock & roll baby. We would shoot pool with each other’s girlfriends and share a can of beans broken down on the roadside.”

8/ If you could go back in time on which artist’s front door would you knock and
ask to have a selfie together?

“We would go to Nellcote in Southern France. With Keith & Gram Parsons and jam it out in a sweaty basement. Avoiding the substance abuse we would get the exiled guys back on the red wine and have a damn good time.”

9/ Plans for 2018?
“More hotels & patching up broken dreams. Fix up the car & build a snowman.
Then go write another album.”

10/ The band’s ultimate dream?
“To tour Europe & the Americas, eating enchiladas and drink nothing but tequila.”

Bottoms up, Carlo, and thanks for the chat…

sings legendary frontman Dave Vanian. Yes, indeed, apocalypse now is just around the corner and if you don’t know why you’ve been sleeping the past few years or you are either a Trump/May/Putin/Erdogan/Kim Jong-un or IS fan and you are blind and deaf to these lethal fascists. THE LIMIÑANAS Score Big Time With Their New ‘No Fillers All Killers’ Album… SHADOW PEOPLE

When you can’t resist new sonic vibrations, play them on…

OnRepeat

(artwork new album)

Mind-expanding French duo THE LIMIÑANAS just released their new longplayer – and to my hungry ears, without a shadow of a doubt, their best so far – SHADOW PEOPLE. No fillers, all killers. All their well-known sonic key strengths meet in harmony just brilliantly on this new LP with Marie‘s irresistible, repetitive, tribal kicks and Lionel‘s sensual guitar grooves as the non-stop throbbing heartbeat from the very ouverture to the melancholic finish. The mesmeric collaborations are spot on as usual (with New Order/Joy Division bass legend Peter Hook, psychedelia junkie Anton Newcombe / French singer/author Bertrand Belin and French actress/musician Emmanuelle Seigner) and fit the whole story perfectly.

The overall hypnotic and gloomy swagger transfer you to the cinematic glamour and twilight glitter of a film noir. Spellbinding jams infiltrate all pitch-black corners of the
dark side of your satisfied mind. This is the first truly striking record of the new year.
Dim the lights, relax, have yourself a drink, alert all of your senses and experience an avalanche of sensory trips on repeat, like me…

BELLY – Magical Debut Album ‘STAR’ Turns 25…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

22 January 2018

BAND: BELLY

ALBUM: STAR

RELEASED: 25 January 1993 – 25 years ago / The LP was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of at least 500,000 units on February 21, 1994

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Tanya Donelly’s songwriting began to blossom on Throwing Muses’ Real Ramona, and Belly’s debut, Star, is where it reaches fruition. Using the trancy harmonies of dream pop as a foundation, Donelly expands the genre’s boundaries, trimming away its pretensions and incorporating a flair for sweet, concise pop hooks and folk-rock inflections. She also spikes her airy melodies with disarmingly disturbing lyrics. Images of betrayal and death float throughout the album, but what hits home initially — and what stays after the album is finished, are the hooks, whether it’s the rolling sing along of “Gepetto,” the surging “Slow Dog,” the melancholy ‘Stay’ or the cool, detached sexiness of ‘Feed The Tree.’ An enchanting debut.

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: STAR still shines like a glittering diamond. Sparkling, twinkling and, yes, totally starry-eyed. Tanya Donnely‘s angelic voice gives the whole dreamy experience a special touch, a glamorous color and a lasting impression while
the mixed emotions keep it all human and real. Magnificent record by a magnificent
band with a magnificent singer/songwriter…

THREE HIGHLIGHTS: Feed The Tree / Gepetto / Full Moon, Empty Heart

* FEED THE TREE – the vibrant single…

* GEPETTO – elevating galvanism…

* FULL MOON, EMPTY HEART – magical in sound and vision…

Pop paradise in full
