CHERRY RED RECORDS Brings The British Punk Past Back With ‘1978 THE YEAR THE UK TURNED DAY-GLO’

28 Augustus 2020

Legendary British label CHERRY RED RECORDS – The Unmistakable Voice Of Independence Since 1978 – released a 3-CD set last year called 1977 – The Year Punk Broke Down covering the UK punk explosion in microscopic detail, prompting rave reviews, extremely healthy sales figures and numerous comments along the lines of “You guys are the mutt’s nuts – when’s the follow-up coming out?”

Guess what? Cherry Red Records are still the mutt’s nuts as they released today
1978 – THE YEAR THE UK TURNED DAY-GLO (RIP, you wonderful Poly Styrene)

Over three glorious, packed-to-the-brim CDs, they investigate the sounds of 1978 as
the original punk template fractured into a dazzling day-glo riot of sub-genres: new wave, post-punk, proto-Oi, power-pop, punk poets, the mod revival, ska-punk, synth-oriented electronic/industrial music and a whole load of additional noises that, over forty years later, have still to be classified by the fifth estate, the fourth column or even the Third Reich. We document various regional scenes, paying close attention to the likes of Manchester, Scotland and, in particular, Northern Ireland, where the arrival of punk
was a life-affirming relief from the horrors of everyday life.

From household names (The Jam, The Stranglers, The Cure, Public Image Ltd) to
groups who barely progressed beyond their own bedrooms, major label  careerists

to DIY enthusiasts, one-off mavericks (led by the blessed Jilted John) to songs specifically crafted as hit singles, every aspect of a vibrant, multi-faceted scene is represented on our marathon four-hour, 79-track anthology.

Housed in a capacity wallet, 1978: The Year The UK Turned Day-Glo includes a 48-page booklet that includes the lowdown on every track. Loaded with vim and vigour, it’s another essential purchase for anyone with even a passing interest in the British music scene of the late Seventies. OI OI OI!

It’s hard to pick only five classics to show how unmissable  this historic document is but Turn Up The Volume! did it anyway…

THE CHARLATANS – Fourth Self-Titled Album Is 25

28 August 2020

Band: The Charlatans (West-Midlands, UK)
Active: Since 1988
Album: The Charlatans – fourth LP

Released: 28 August 1995 – 25 year ago today
Score: #1 in the UK

AllMusic wrote: “The Charlatans demonstrated signs of a revival on ‘Up to Our Hips’,
yet that record in no way suggested the full-fledged return to form of The Charlatans, the group’s most ambitious, focused, and successful album. The group hasn’t changed its sonic approach, yet its music has deepened, incorporating heavy dance elements without losing its core sound. The Charlatans illustrates how a working rock & roll band can balance traditional rock and modern post-acid house music, and the results are frequently glorious.”
Score: 4/5

Singles: Just Crashin’ In / Just Lookin’ / Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over

GREG DULLI & MARK LANEGAN Cover BOB DYLAN For RSD 2020 (29th August)

28 August 2020

GREG DULLI & MARK LANEGAN, two of the most characterful voices in
rock, you can recognize anytime, anywhere joined forces years ago as
The Gutter Twins leaving a lasting impression with their 2008 album
Saturnalia.

The two 24/7 musicians now teamed up again for a cover of Bob Dylan’s
Girl From The North Country
(a duet with his buddy, the late legend
Johnny Cash) from his 1969 Nashville Skyline album.

The cover was the B-side to Greg Dulli‘s single A Ghost from his magnificent solo
album Random Desire (one of this year’s best longplayers). Tomorrow 29 August,
the duet song is available as a limited blue vinyl release. More info HERE. Suppose
living troubadour legend Bob Dylan would have joined the pair for this unqiue recording. Sorry… I was only dreaming.

Sing it, guys…

Alive And Kicking Back – Brooklyn Gang HYPOLUXO Returns With New Glowing Cut ‘RIDDEN’

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

27 August 2020

HYPOLUXO is an alt-rock gang out of Brooklyn that’s been around for a couple
years before they clashed with their label. But they came out of it on the good
side with force, confidence, and a new record partner, Terrible Records.

The alive and kicking back result is new single RIDDEN. A song
written when the band didn’t know if they would survive.

“An ode to me having to get out of my house and continuing the creative process
from this place of dejection and despondency
” says frontman Samuel Cogen.

‘Ridden‘ feels and sounds like if Hypoluxo met Parquet Courts, Kurt Vile, The War
On Drugs
‘ Adam Granduciel and The Smiths‘ legendary guitar hero Johnny Marr
at a cross-road, somewhere in the middle of nowhere and had an electrifying
jam, taped by Tom Verlaine, without any of their record labels looking over their
shoulders. Expect a hypnotic flow, a free-feeling glow, and a new sonic gusto.
