Chrissie: “A few weeks into lockdown last year, James sent me the new Dylan track ‘Murder Most Foul’… I remember where I was sitting the day that Kennedy was shot – every reference in the song. Whatever Bob does, he still manages somewhere in there to make you laugh because as much as anything, he’s a comedian. He’s always funny and always has something to say. That’s when I called James and said, “let’s do some Dylan covers”, and that’s what started this whole thing.”
Rolling Stone writes: “Chrissie Hynde proved the bona fides of her Bob Dylan fandom
decades ago. She sang “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” with him onstage at London’s Wembley
Stadium in ’84 and serenaded him with her own jaw-dropping, gospel-tinged rendition of “I Shall Be Released” at his 30th anniversary concert in ’91… So an album like Standing in the Doorway, which collects nine Dylan cover songs, must have felt like second nature to her… What’s most striking about Standing in the Doorway is how easy the recordings came to Hynde and Walbourne. The Pretenders have always been underrated covers artists, going back to their first single, a cover of the Kinks’ “Stop Your Sobbing,” and Hynde has always had a rare knack for figuring out what she has in common with the soul of song and playing that up. “

Turn Up The Volume: As much as I love Chrissie Hynde‘s voice and artistic persona,
and her bold choice – not the obvious ones – of Dylan songs she covered to celebrate
the living legend’s 80th birthday, only Dylan can really sing Dylan.
