From Rock Roar To Hardcore And Back – COCAINE PISS Unleash New Slam Dunk ‘BAD KID’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

11 March 2022

Band: COCAINE PISS
Who: Smoking-hot 4-piece from Luik, Belgium
fronted by the unwearying Amazon Aurélie Poppins
Active: Since 2013
Albums: The Pool (2015), The Dancer (2016)
and Passionate and Tragic (2019).

Poppins: “We’ve been recording new songs for the first time
in a while. And a bunch of shows to come! We feel like dry plants
that just got rehydrated. Life is flowing lovelovelove.”

New single: BAD KID

Turn Up The Volume: Cocaine Piss rockin’ out? You betcha. Cocaine Piss still hardcorin’ out? You betcha. It all happens in one slam dunk. A dirty mid-tempo groove with Aurélie Poppins singing as a don’t-mess-with-me post-punk grrrl, quickly followed by the demonic she-devil in her screaming her way out. Then it’s back to the sexy start before hitting hard again. Holy bloody smoke! I love this shit! I love this mad motherrocker. Cocaine Piss rule… again.

New credo: love your friends / burn the system /
be unmanageable / and cowboy boots always <3

She is a bad kid
Only doing stuff on her terms
She’s a bad kid
Unmanageable and stubborn as hell
Bad kid
Loving as if her world was enchanting
Bad kid
She’s a bad kid

I’m sure you know who the bad-ass kid is.

These boots are made for walking…

All By Himself – HARRY NILSSON Went To No 1 In The UK Without You 50 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

11 March 2022

Late legend HARRY NILSSON (15 June 1941 – 15 Jan 1994, he died of heart attack)
scored his biggest hit in 1972, 50 years ago today, when he topped the British charts
(also 4 weeks at No 1 in the USA). WITHOUT YOU was written and performed by
English rockers Badfinger.

When Nilsson heard the song at a party, he thought it was
a Beatles track. He loved it, recorded it and scored big time.

All by himself,
without you…

Detroit’s Manic Noise Rockers MC5 Kick Out The Jams Again After… 51 Years

11 March 2022

The legendary Detroit noise-turbo MC5 shook the rock world in 1969 with a riff-insane live album called KICK OUT THE JAMS. They canned two (studio) LPs afterward – I wonder who knows them – and then it went down hill, but later a couple of reunions with changing line-ups followed. The band lost two frontmen/vocalists who died at an early age: Rob Tyner and Fred “Sonic” Smith (Patti Smith’s first husband).

Video: Historic performance with Rob Tyner on vocals and guitarist Wayne Kramer on the left

In 2018 the original guitarist WAYNE KRAMER constructed a band of modern day musicians with Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden, Brendan Canty of Fugazi, Marcus Durant, Don Was and Faith No More bassist Billy Gould to go on tour to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of Kick Out the Jams.

In the wake of their sixth nomination for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Kramer now announced a brand new album, the first… in 51 years. The new LP comes in October.
Ahead of it we’ll get two singles. You can hear a snippet of the first one Heavy Lifting
(co-written by Kramer with current MC5 singer Brad Brooks and longtime collaborator
Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against The Machine) right here…

And back on the road,
to kick out the jams again…

They Still Got The Same Old Blues – THE BLACK KEYS Share Their Brand New Single/Video ‘WILD CHILD’

New striking strokes

11 March 2022

Band: THE BLACK KEYS (Akron, Ohio)
Who: Best known blues-rock duo in the world
Active: Since 2001 / 12 LPs (new one included)

New album: DROPOUT BOOGIE
Out: 13 May 2022 – order info here

Info: “As they’ve done their entire career, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney wrote all of the material for their new album, Dropout Boogie, in the studio, and the album captures a number of first takes that hark back to the stripped-down blues rock of their early days making music together in Akron, Ohio, basements. After hashing out initial ideas at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, the duo welcomed new collaborators Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia to the sessions, marking the first time they’ve invited multiple new contributors to work simultaneously on one of their own albums.”

Lead single: WILD CHILD

The blues tandem looks like a pair of stand-up comedians on the new album cover. It’s true, they never saw themselves as rock ‘n roll innovators. They just wanna have fun (and make a copious living out of it). Wild Child just confirms all that. It’s Black Keys by numbers. A bit too much of the same, if you ask me.

effort after a quarter of a century.”
Score: 3/5.

Turn Up The Volume: A pretty vivid mix of muscled jackhammers and power ballads. Nothing new but nothing bad. It’s only rock’ n roll but we like it, don’t we? Well, I do.

Experimental And Enigmatic And Accessible – JEFFF The Brotherhood Dropped New EP ‘YE OLDE…’

Extended plays

11 March 2022

Artists: JEFF The Brotherhood
Who: American two-piece rock band consisting of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall and guitarist , hailing from Nashville, Tennessee.
Active: Since 2001 / 11 studio albums so far

New EP: YE OLDE…

Along with the release comes this message from the bros on their Bandcamp page
(if anybody knows what they’re talking about, give me a call. Thanks.)

“I imbue thee, my divinely favored brother, to ride eastward from the Gates of Alexandria, two moons on palfrey across an ancient sea of cracked earth, o’er a valley with two yellow rivers, ascending upward through the pass between the snowy spade and the rocky twin daggers. There, opens a vast plateau filled with white sand and black stallions, a kingdom without a king, where heretics and saints share prayers in pure faith. Sire, you know of my abstention from the mystical, my shrewdness to decipher the flesh of meat from the scents of hunger, yet I assure you, my worshipful master, that I have reached the Land of Cockaigne!

Sugary smoke and distant drumming waft through palm trees, drawing throngs of Wakoku warriors, Persian nymphs, and Daimo shamans around a trio of musicians. A Jacobite monk, cloaked in a hooded robe, kneels against the earth and blows into a gemshorn, inside which the tootle-too transforms into an herbal potion that flows into the mouths of naked pilgrims. A squirrelly jester donned in bright fabrics with motley patterns, pounds his feet against goat skins, while with strings tied to his fingers, pulls the wind to a standstill and holds back the sun itself from setting beyond the horizon. Sitting on a silk pillow, a swarthy alchemist, his neck wrapped by a sleeping snake, plucks sounds from metal strings that form streams of pink smoke, lifting into the sky and falling down as morsels of soft cheese.

I defy you to ask upon yourself, o faithful priest, whether our brotherhood is bound, not by the oaths we pledge to wars of the flesh, but rather to the communion we share while we await the eternal spirit beyond. Farewell, my all.”

Turn Up The Volume: Both experimental and accessible,
jazzy and psychedelic, enigmatic and within reach.

Canadian Indie Pop Romantics BASEMENT REVOLVER Enrapture With 2nd Album ‘EMBODY’

New released longplayers

10 March 2022

Band: BASEMENT REVOLVER
Who: Indie outfit crafting both noisy and graceful shoegaze-esque
tracks out of their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario since 2016

“Their sophomore LP, Embody, is explicit about these new ideas and new thoughts,
addressing them with a deeper sound and crisper production to adroitly express the
complexity of the world. It is an album of friendship, of working out identity together and making deeply personal art. Coming out in the middle of pandemic means that embodiment has to take new forms, and this album is one of those ways forward. This record, with its complex sonic landscape, sometimes lush and sometimes stark, is of a piece with their earlier work, but it’s deeper and more self-aware. Embody is the sound of freedom, especially in the midst of such pain, both locally and globally. Trading tracks virtually, missing the camaraderie of weekly rehearsals, and the isolation of that means that the album is full of hopeful waiting: to tour, of course, but also to engage these new understandings together, on the road.”

Turn Up The Volume: The most striking instrument on the album is the angelic voice of songwriter Chrisy Hurn. Just phenomenal. To my avid ears, she may join the female vocal likes of stars such as Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, The Sundays’ Harriet Wheeler, Belly‘s Tanya Donelly, and Mazzy Star‘s Hope Sandoval. Yes that good, that magical. Check ballad beauties Slow / Blackhole / Storm / Tired and my two favorites Skin and Long Way and you’ll hear why Chrisy’s voice is the band’s shining star. And when they rock out (Be Okay / Dissolve / Tunnel Vision) multi-layered shoegaze guitars take over and create a burning wall-of-sound that blows you away.

Overall this high-quality second LP encourages young people to be confident to be themselves, to be proud of who they are, and proud of how they look. It’s a vulnerable
and heartwarming, a passional and human, a tender and longing piece of work for heart and soul. Hats off.
