German Songstress ANIQO Impresses With Her New Poignant Album – From ‘BIRTH’ To Rebirth

21 March 2022

Artist: ANIQO
Who: Anita Goß aka ANIQO comes from deep family roots in Wismar (Germany)
on the Baltic coast. She bridges the gap between today’s indie, rock & pop and
the best of the post-punk and new wave era.

New album: BIRTH

“BIRTH stands at the beginning of everything that started 6 years ago as ANIQO.
It’s not only a personal liberation but also a message to face life with hope: “I decided
I didn’t want to be in the darkness anymore. I want to be in the light. I want to hope.
I want to get back up after the deep pain. So I direct the glimpse of hope out of the
darkness – into the light!”

Turn Up The Volume: You’ll feel shivers going down your spine
on several occasions on this wholehearted album with cathartic
musings like Birth, Go On and The Sea.

Her touching and expressive voice balances somewhere between
the vulnerable, nicotine-injected timbre of Marianne Faithfull ((Deep
Sea Fish / Balance
) and the gripping poignancy of PJ Harvey (Vivre
Libre / Love Life
).

Masterly songwriting all the way.

Aniqo re-experiences her destressing turmoil of the past, but looks
forward to that liberating light at the end of a long tunnel. From birth
to rebirth. A spellbinding and spiritual record.

Fear / Deep Sea Fish / Must Surrender

DAVE GAHAN And His SOULSAVERS On A High When Covering PJ HARVEY On TV

21 March 2022

DAVE GAHAN, frontman of melodramatic darkwave popstars
Depeche Mode released a covers album, entitled Imposter last
year along with his SOULSAVERS.

Last weekend they were invited on the American TV Show Fallon
and astounded with a cover of a PJ Harvey song The Desperate
Kingdom Of Love
. A magnetic ballad from her sixth album
Uh Huh Her (2004).

Gahan‘s take is splendiferous. He goes on a high along with
his bewitching performance. Tremendous version executed
with fervor and ardor.

Here’s why…

U2 Topped UK Albums Chart With ‘THE JOSHUA THREE’ 35 Years Ago

Back In Time

21 March 2022

THE JOSHUA TREE, the Irish rockers’ fifth album, produced by Daniel Lanois and
Brian Eno made them global celebrities. The record was inspired by their American
tour experiences, relating literature and Uncle Sam’s politics, and probably because
of their desire to be massive in the U.S.

It reached the top spot in several European countries, in New Zealand,
in Canada and (of course) in the UK where U2 hit numero uno this day
in 1987, 35 years ago.

Singles/clips: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
/ Where The Streets Have No Name / With Or Without You

FONTAINES D.C. Cover THE CURE Live In Dublin

Daily electricity to load your batteries

20 March 2022

Young generations covering old generations is not a new thing.
The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, and other giants did it over and
over again, out of respect and love for what musicians/mentors
did for their careers. And nothing has changed since then.

Young Irish wolves FONTAINES D.C. did it last weekend
on a special St. Patricks Day live show/stream.

They picked a big one from Goth oldies The Cure.
A pearl of a single from their 1987 longplayer
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

Now Playing… Debut Album BOB DYLAN – Released 60 Years Ago

Back in time

20 March 2022

My all-time favorite singer-songwriter BOB DYLAN released his self-titled
debut album 60 years ago (19 March 1962). The start of an unsurpassed
career still going.

AllMusic wrote: “Bob Dylan’s first album is a lot like the debut albums by the
Beatles and the Rolling Stones — a sterling effort, outclassing most, if not all,
of what came before it in the genre, but similarly eclipsed by the artist’s own
subsequent efforts. A significant portion of the record is possessed by the style
and spirit of Woody Guthrie…his album marked the pinnacle of that earlier phase,
before it was overshadowed by this artist’s more ambitious subsequent work.”

Score: 4/5

One of the highlights Baby, Let Me Follow You Down (original by Gary Davis
and Eric Von Schmidt
) played here with a full BAND, years later…

American Singer-Songwriter PAUL ANDREWS And His Soulful New Album ‘FROM THE DISTANCE’

20 March 2022

Artist: PAUL ANDREWS
Who: New York City based singer-songwriter

“I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t a part of my life.
In my earliest memories, I see my mom loading up the record
player with 45’s. She would play every kind of music and we
would all sing along, wrong words and all.”

New album: FROM THE DISTANCE
Order info here.

“A nostalgic musical sensibility can be heard throughout the multi-layered From the Distance, encompassing 1960s R&B, 1970s pop, 1980s new wave/dance, and 1990s dance—with musical flourishes that recall recordings by Tears for Fears, Burt Bacharach, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Swing Out Sister, Steely Dan, Sade, Men Without Hats, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Basia/Matt Bianco. Still, the songs of From the Distance are firmly rooted in the here and now.”

Turn Up The Volume: This is a varied moods record with synth-pop sparks (Dream State / Borrowed Time / Shady Pines) that made me think instantly of the galvanizing glow of Prefab Sprout, with soft Motown vibes à la Marvin Gaye (Reach The Stars / Masquerade), and with an invitation here and there to do some of your best dance moves.

Expect an overall soulful ambiance that feels both tenderhearted and
dream-stimulating, but without, lyrically, losing track of the real world
outside.

Headphones on,
dim the lights,
press play and
float away…
