Band: CHEW MAGNA Who: Up-and-coming indies
from Manchester.
New single/video: SECRETS
Their ode to compulsive lying,
bull-shitting and hyperbole. Oops.
Laurie (singer/songwriter): “Secrets originally started life as an acoustic song
I wrote for my folk group, but we jammed it a few times, channeling bands like
Sebadoh and Superchunk and it transformed pretty quickly. Clocking in at just
over two minutes, what ‘Secrets’ lacks in duration it makes up for in volume!
Simon: We wanted it to be noisy to juxtapose the poppy melodies. Laurie
and I don’t play a single note in the verse, we just leave the guitars to start
squealing”.
TUTV: It’s one of those (not so frequent) tunes that you know you’ll love after
15 seconds. Secrets is a straightforward, solid rocker that leaves the gate with
greedy drum hits and screeching guitars in the back, but in an eye/ear blink the
engine starts up and races towards the jubilant chorus. A bit of Weezer and, yes, Lou Barlow (Sebadoh / Dinosaur Jr) here and there.
Anyway, it’s an instant rock earworm. One little remark: it’s pretty short.
On the other hand, lets not forget that the Ramones made a living out of
2-minute songs and secondly, there’s always the repeat button. Click.
Singing the winning song of the Eurovision Song Contest 1970, together in 1998.
‘All Kinds Of Everything ‘ performed by Irish singer Dana.
written by Derry Lindsay and Jackie Smith.
Who: A six-piece band based in Lewes (East Sussex, UK), playing all original, dirty British blues, Americana, Psych and Rock n’ Roll. In the Summer of 2020, during lockdown, they released their fourth album Dictated Democracy (TUTV: great title).
TDR: “We wrote these songs from the summer onwards, thriving off the additional songwriting input from Mark Wood since joining the band in April. We wanted to record the songs as live as possible, and thanks to the lovely space at Metway, we were able to make this a reality! We recorded all 8 of these songs in the live room over those 6 days. We couldn’t be happier with how they have turned out.”
TUTV: It all starts with a sort of voodo-trance warm-up with blood-curdling guitars, a floating flute, bits of glowing harmonica and a spellbinding vocal part by goosebumps singer Beth Lees on opener Brothers And Sisters. Afterward the heat is turned up on Son
Of America, Table 10, Last Train At Midnight and The Hunter with the fiery Americana voice
of Mark Woods. Psychobilly-like swamp blues at its hottest. Another sultry example is Last Train At Midnight.
In between, you can stomp your feet on Blood and Dirt spiced with sharp-edged guitar play, and take a breather on heartfelt tune Ships and the tremendously beautiful ballad Stand Up Tall, where Lees and Woods enchant with a most gripping duet and an acoustic guitar gently weeps.
It’s not like I’m a blues expert, but trust me you don’t have to be one at all to
hear and feel the emotive energy, the striking heart-and-soul vocality, the versatile
musical expertise and the vehement ardency of the flaming flare-ups, all at play here.
Daily noise that works faster and harder than any stimulant

Nashville‘s inflammable garage rockers BE YOUR OWN PET had some bonkers
fun between 2004-2008, vanished into oblivion afterward, but last year they couldn’t
stop themselves from coming back and starting to play an endless series of gigs.
And now it’s new music time. The revitalized bloodhounds have a new
LP, titled MOMMY ready for a 25 August release. Pre-order info here.

With BIG TROUBLE they just dropped the 4th single off the longplayer.
Jemina Pearl: “I want wages for housework! I want childcare for free! I want on-demand abortions! Full body autonomy! I live in a country that has taken away the basic human right to an abortion and then has the audacity to ask ‘Why are you so angry?’ ‘Big Trouble’ is about how the daily injustices are all connected to the overarching societal issues of living in a patriarchy.”
It’s pure BYOP. A blustery pop-punk projectile to hit moronic,
conservative politicians with, in the Divide States Of America.
Make-up rock legends NEW YORK DOLLS released their infamous
self-titled debut longplayer 50 years ago today, on 27 July 1973.
They all had a personality crisis and were desperately looking
for a kiss, some pills, a bad girl and a jet boy, and Frankenstein,
who had kidnapped a Vietnamese baby on the subway train.
They were trash.
Already the third shared single following the breezy musing Ocean’s Apart
and the looking-back spoken-word story of Drifter’s Prayer.
James Skelly (frontman):”“This was me chasing sunlit shadows, trying to capture
the beauty of the summer. For some strange reason, I feel a duty to do that from time
to time. It didn’t work first time around but we took it into the studio and used some old
tricks we’ve learned – editing the violins into the chorus, turning almost everything backwards and adding some Glenn Campbell guitars – and we came out with the hazy summer psychedelia the album needed to break up the intensity.”
TUTV: If you haven’t found your sonic twilight summer companion yet, then this new Coral tune will be the one. The Liverpool gang are experts in writing/creating hum-along, whistle-song, sing-along and dream-along pearls while you can tap your feet to the beat. Imagine sitting in a rockin’ chair on the porch of your farmhouse in a Serge Leone-directed spaghetti western. That’s the vibe.
When the sad news broke yesterday that (in)famous Irish singer/songwriter SINEAD O’CONNOR has died it hit like a hard punch in my face, a real shocker.
An unforgettable moment from 1995.
After going all over the internet to find out what happened, I went to my 20-track Sinead playlist I already compiled back in 2020 when I made a lot of my-fav-arists/bands lists. Yes, I loved her voice, her songwriting, her presence, her dauntless outspokenness and I related heavily to her life-long struggle with bipolar health problems as I experienced them myself for years. It’s hell, pure hell.
Angeeta Sentana (vocalist/songwriter): “We were at a party one night, and I drank this
blue cocktail, and it left a stain on my lips, making them blue. I thought I looked super ugly,
but my boyfriend still thought I was perfect and kissed me, regardless. The line ‘Kiss me on
my blue-stained lips’ is a metaphor for him liking me and accepting me for who I am.”
TUTV: This is flashy steamed-up pop exaltation. Blue-Stained Lips dashes with an irresistible fuzz and youthful buzz, while firework guitars fly all over the place and
the frolicsome vocal harmonies color the track with bravado like teen sensation The Linda Lindas do. Add this to you summer party playlist. It’s kiss-tastic.
It’s s-punky stuff.
The new lyric video was directed by Carkultera Wage Sae and Yohanes Catur Nugroho as a sequel to Grrrl Gang‘s other music
clips.
