Solid gold rock star MARC BOLAN, who died tragically in a car accident at only 29,
started his career with a band named Tyrannosaurus Rex, released 4 LPs and then
the group’s name changed to T. REX (1967-1977), who made 12 albums.
Their 2nd LP as T.Rex, titled ELECTRIC WARRIOR, has become a classic in
the glam rock genre. It came out on 24 September 1971, 55 years ago today.
It was a #1 hit in the UK.
It was produced by Tony Visconti, who worked a lot
with Bowie and several other big-name musicians.
Pitchfork said in retrospect: What makes this record so enduring is its almost accidental emotional depth. When T.Rex is kicking out the jams, they sound like they’re having the most gleeful, absurd good time ever committed to wax. There’s nothing so glorious in rock and roll as hearing Bolan croon, “Just like a car, you’re pleasing to behold/ I’ll call you Jaguar if I may be so bold,” over his namesake boogie.”
