2 April 2024

Former Dire Straits singer-songwriter/guitar hero MARK KNOPFLER
has a special 4-track EP, named THE BOY, out on Record Store Day,
April 20.

The EP is inspired by Mark’s childhood captivation with the giant funfair
held every year on Newcastle Town Moor. The four tracks connect themes
of the fairgrounds and their boxing booths commonplace in the Britain
of the 50s and early 60s.

As all of Knopfler‘s fans know, his 10th solo album, titled
One Deep River is slated for release on April 12th.

ONE SQUARE MILE – Californian Metal-Punk Hit Team With 5 Cannonballs On ‘SOURCE OF SUFFERING’ EP

30 January 2024

Band: ONE SQUARE MILE
Who: Noiseniks from Hermosa Beach, California who got together in 2017. The band’s name originates from the city of Hermosa Beach, which covers about…one square mile of land. While 1SM is influenced by the many iconic punk and hardcore bands who came out of Hermosa Beach and the South Bay, their approach has been to not place any limits on their sound or style and simply write music that speaks to their lives and experiences.

New EP: SOURCE OF SUFFERING

EP Artwork

TUTV said : Metal Punk mania at work! Expect five fast-forward cannonballs. No breaks,
no brakes, no mistakes. Imagine The Stooges fronted by Plasmatics‘s she-devil Wendy O. Williams or Motörhead fronted by Riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna.

1SQM’s vivacious Vanessa Kaylor screams her lungs out with self-assured brio and
enough decibels to make alarm systems in your neighbourhood go bonkers. She’s
backed by a metallic turbo turning up the heat even more with all their burners on.

You really need to be in great physical condition if you want to start a maddening
moshpit here. These motherrockers produce blazing fireworks for about 14 minutes. Enough time to get you out of breath for the rest of the day. Punk rules, metal rules,
OSM rule.

Bonkers Time!

NIGHTFEEDER – Seattle Noizz Hit Team Take The Highway To Hell On New Diabolic ‘DISGUSTÖR’ EP

Rad extended plays

9 January 2024

NIGHTFEEDER are a loudmouthed/earthshaking hardcore punk hit team from Seattle, WA.
In 2022 they unleashed their debut album Cut All Your Face Off followed by their self-titled EP a year later.

And to open the debates in 2024 the 4-piece let us hear again, loud and clear, how
much they love macabre, diabolic and psychotic NOIZZZ. Their brand new 3-track EP,
titled DEGUSTÖR is now available on 7″ only. Buy it here.

Compared to this sonic riot-gun madmen Metallica are pussies and Black Sabbath
are a pop band. The 3 deafening eruptions on this 7″ vinyl bulldoze as hellish as
the EP’s artwork looks like.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually went to hell to party and had a photoshoot
with all the zombies afterward. Bang-on cool, right? You bloody betcha. Think Fucked Up acting fucked up.

Alert your neighbours before you press play
and barricade your frontdoor to avoid they
the anti-huge-decibels police storm in.

Aaaarrgghh.

the renowned critics below who are raving about them too. The three cast iron
battle-axes released their 6-track EP, titled YOU’RE WELCOME last July.

2. ‘CHAOS OF TIME’ by JODIE LANGFORD (UK)

Turn Up The Volume has his eyes and ears on this kick-ass hip-rap-hop poet from
Hull/East Yorkshire, UK for a while now. Actually, since her stupendous debut single
I Miss It.

Why? Her human open-mindedness, her critical, head-on outspokenness, her faster-than-a-riot-gun ranting, and her sharp daily life observations. And last but not least the fact she embedded all I just mentioned in head-spinning and hyperkinetic tunes on her
CHAOS OF TIME
EP. A 6-track triumph!

3. ‘DEPRESSION BREAKFAST’ by Band: JAPANESE JESUS (Ireland)

These two Irish noiseniks produce an illegal amount of decibels with 5 merciless sledgehammers , 5 brutal bulldozing bangers. Industrial havoc causing paranoia.
Chainsaw guitars, psychotic drumming, sonic clash and crash chaos and mental
vocals combine for a sassy shocker of an EP.

4. ‘ART BRUT’ by NAQOY (Hungary)

This Hungarian noise duo hit bullseye with their ‘Art Brut‘ EP.

Naqoy: “This is the imprint of the processing of our last years, which has been
emotionally and physically highly turbulent and grueling with a lot of self-doubt, discouragements, depression, burnout and forgiveness. It is also a meditation about
art and self-expression and an attempt to signal consolation to some of those (not just
artists), who feel they are somehow stuck outside of an establishment.

TUTV: Art Brut is a mind-boggling piece of instrumental work dominated by razor-blade guitars, repetitive Krautrock-like percussion, tons of feedback/distortion and terrifying plangency. No, it’s not just noise. It’s a fascinating, spine-chilling and well-structured trip into an inky universe that triggers your darkest imagination. No arty-farty bullshit or special effects production for Naqoy.

Art Brut is a flabbergasting noise Odyssey.

5. ‘FIESTA ALBA’ by FIESTA ALBA (Rome, Italy)

Fiesta Alba are 4 masked weirdos describing themselves as “losers on a planet
where nobody really wins. He who has nothing to lose cannot lose anything.”

Last April they released their self-titled debut EP.

They look like a male, colorful masked version of the Russian political punk Grrls Pussy Riot. They mix, cleverly and masterly, math rock, minimalist afrobeat, electronica, post-punk, funk, hip-rap-hop and anything that will trigger you to get your lazy ass out of your lazy couch, move your furniture and make room for some psychoneurotic dance moves.

This chaotic 5 track cocktail EP, with 4 different vocalists, is a mind-bending tangle of all
things excitingly kooky for nightclubs where misfits, dropouts, eccentrics and other related outsiders have a ball. Yes, wicked music for wicked people by wicked madcaps. Capiche?

NAQOY – Noise Rock Duo Take You On Flabbergasting Odyssey On New EP ‘ART BRUT’

12 December 2023

Band: NAQOY
Who: Makers of industrial, noise, post-punk, ritual
and ambient music from Budapest, Hungary

New 5-track EP, titled ART BRUT is the third instalment
of the imagined Triptych of releases – Into The Fog (2020)
and four (2021).

Naqoy: “This is the imprint of the processing of our last years, which has been emotionally
and physically highly turbulent and grueling with a lot of self-doubt, discouragements, depression, burnout and forgiveness. It is also a meditation about art and self-expression and an attempt to signal consolation to some of those (not just artists), who feel they are somehow stuck outside of an establishment.

The songs are reflections of the stages of a path from being unaware and skeptical of your own abilities (Maze) to accepting the journey to the totality of your own self (Leaves always fall in silence). If you can understand or have experienced these feelings before, you will understand what is behind the tracks of Art Brut and why we have chosen to put them in this form as you hear them.”

Video for opening piece ‘Maze’

TUTV: Art Brut is a mind-boggling piece of instrumental work dominated by chainsaw guitars, repetitive Krautrock-like percussion, tons of feedback/distortion and terrifying plangency. No, it’s not just noise. It’s a fascinating, spine-chilling and well-structured trip into an inky universe that triggers your darkest imagination. No arty farty bullshit or special effects production for Naqoy.

At times Lou Reed‘s almost unlistenable 1975 album Metal Music Machine comes
to mind. His fuck you record label LP. The difference is that Art Brut is not only listenable
but also terrifically absorbing. There are moments my ears are intimidated and my puzzled mind loses contact with reality. Mind you, I like this sort of sonic electric chair experience. When played to max volume, you really can feel the music physically and psychically.

Closing track Leaves Always Fall in Silence is the pièce de résistance.
A pitch black 8.33-minute jam that sounds as if it was composed for
a hellish horror movie.

Art Brut is a flabbergasting Odyssey.
One of the best EPs I heard all year.
Don’t miss it.

Great extended plays

7 November 2023

Band: CLONE (Vancouver, Canada)
Who: A female-fronted collective of musicians from various eclectic backgrounds
who bonded over their shared love of 70’s rock, specifically glam rock. They produce
rock anthems that fuse punk with glitter and power with pop.

New EP: KNOCK OUT DROPS VOL. II

Kelly Zombor (guitarist): “Our goal was to capture the raw energy and bombastic spirit of 70’s glam and spin it with our punk meets modern pop vibe. We really feel like we achieved that. We also wanted to capture the live feel of our current lineup. To that end, we gave ourselves a tight, 3 day schedule to complete six songs. After 3 days we actually recorded 7.”

Royal Queen video

TUTV: One of the most exiting/thrilling no nonsense, party-orienated rock eras was
the 70s one with British glam and glitter icons such as T.Rex, The Sweet, Roxy Music, David
Bowie

CLONE love them all and let us hear it loud and clear on this new banging, stomping
and pumping EP with 7 catchy-as-hell firecrackers, punked-up with crazy guitar fireworks, walloping drumming and the drop-dead gorgeous queen Juniper Watters spicing up all tunes with her sultry and vocal bravado. SLEAFORD MODS Have MORE UK GRIM To Offer With New 5-Track EP

New striking strokes

20 September 2023

Last March British rap-punk poets SLEAFORD MODS
released their 12th longplayer, titled UK Grim

Today they announced a new EP with 5 new songs recorded
at the album sessions. Therefore, the duo named the EP simply
MORE UK GRIM. It’s out on 20 October via Rough Trade.

Along with the news we get a taster called BIG PHARMA.

Jason Williamson (vocalist): “Big Pharma was written in the opening chapters
of autumn 2022 when Covid kicked in again. It carries a lot of the normal Sleaford
Mods absurdism, but also looks at the ongoing fascination with trying to find truths in information wholly pushed by very questionable people,” Williamson said, continuing:

The term ‘Big Pharma’ has been uprooted from its original place, one that rightly
threw critique at the pharmaceutical industry as it produced more and more products
that would ruin lives on a mass scale. Instead now, Big Pharma is more familiar as a
term used by right wing and industrial groups trying to mask the financial aims of their arguments with some kind of critical thinking panache-type legitimacy.

It just feels wrong. It feeds on hopelessness, widespread fear and generations of unfettered misinformation linked to the limited critical perception we as the masses are burdened with.”

It’s SM by numbers, but I like their numbers.

MATTHEW RYAN JACOBS – Americana Romanticism The Canadian Way With His New EP ‘THE TROUBLE IN ME’

16 August 2023

Artist: MATTHEW RYAN JACOBS
Who: A singer/songwriter from Kitchener Waterloo Ontario, CA.
Incorporating everything he loves into his sound. From Delta Blues
to alternative rock, to singer songwriters like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

New EP: THE TROUBLE IN ME

Jacobs about the EP: “The EP took a bit of a different approach than my last one.
My last EP ‘Living in Between’ had a bit more of a blues influence, and a few tracks that
weren’t really single material but added a cool element to the overall EP. With The Trouble
in Me I wanted it to be difficult to pick which songs to release, I wanted each one to be able
to stand on its own.

There is definitely more folk, and I don’t want to say pop, but pop elements to this one;
and that could just be because the songs are better. Lyrically there is a consistent theme of moving on, getting older, and getting over some poorer choices from the past. At points it can very dark, but I think there is plenty of optimism to balance it out. Once again, everything was recorded by Ben Kempel and myself, and mixed by Ben.”

TUTV:: This is Americana romanticism performed the Canadian way. Melancholic, sincere, tender and telling/singing real-life stories. A lot of singer-songwriters/crooners, now and then, such as Matt Bernigner, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Dylan, and many more do not write about the birds and bees, no, they look in-and-outside of their hearts and souls, they register the accompanying emotions and most of them conclude that life isn’t a walk in
the park, as we all experience(d) one way or another. Primus inter pares, Nick Cave even went so far, after investigating the pitch-black side of his mind, that he wrote an album full of murder ballads.

Mind you, Jacobs doesn’t go that far but also looks back and forth, scanning his life from
an introspective point of view. For example, Street Lights is about the inescapable fact that ‘in the end we’re all going to die’. And the title track is about keeping your individualism and not changing who you are to fit whatever people think you should.

He embeds his feelings, reveries and meditations into bittersweet slo-mo tunes, beautifully arranged and grippingly orchestrated. When acoustic and gently weeping electric guitars, a warm 60s-sounding organ and subtle piano play meet each other,
you’re not far away from dreamland. And last but not least there’s Jacob‘s impassioned
and arresting voice, completing the sonic collage he painted here.

Listen/enjoy.
