“This song was inspired by the awkward silence of passengers towards an individual visibly struggling on the tube. Is everyone too busy, or do they just not know what to say? Maybe this person wants to be left alone? Who knows. Everyone at one moment in their life at least has had their own struggles whilst on public transport.”

Tears On The Underground is not a happy piece story-wise but musically it’s a ravishing and captivating pop gem with emotive vocals, upfront and in the back, subtle piano play, riffs left and right and a big-time chorus.

2. ‘Spirit’ by THE KILLERS (Los Angeles)

Last week, the Californian power pop darlings released a ‘best of’ album, named Rebel Diamonds. A 20-track jukebox containing one new song, titled Spirit. A 24-carat killer.

3. ‘Evie’ by HIGHWAYVES (North West England)

This full-impassioned belter thrives on torrid emotions inflamed with
psych-crazy guitars, expressive vocals and a titanic chorus. The ongoing
vitality is overwhelming. It’s the title track of Highwayves new excellent
5-track EP

4. ‘Singerman’ by NEIL LEYTON (Lisbon/Toronto)

Leyton is a seasoned musician who’s been around for a while, playing
in bands and solo later on. Singerman is a supersonic projectile.

About the song: “I wanted to send a shout-out to a great friend and life-long rock ‘n roller, Robert Singerman, who I met at MIDEM and helped us out at CMW back in 2012. He used to be the manager for The Fleshtones from NYC and is just an amazing person – he deserves a song!”

Singerman is a supersonic rocket pushed by hungry guitars/drums,
fervent vocality and a roasting refrain. Near the end, Leyton takes
a breather before heading towards the blustery climax.

5. ‘Love To Walk Away’ by THE VACCINES (UK)

Another ecstatic earworm from the British tunesmiths’ sixth full-length,
baptized Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations out on 12 January 2024.

6. ‘Bartleby’ by MODERN STARS (Rome, Italy)

This Italian outfit describe themselves as instinctive and in the same time flickering,
fuzzy, aerial, groovy, bizarre and distor. And they are totally right when you’ll hear this
new mesmeric piece from their upcoming third album “Termination”, set to be released
in March 2024, is out via Little Cloud Records, clostridiumrecords, and Sister 9 Recordings.

The song is inspired by American writer Herman Melville’s famed
1853 narrative, Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street.

Bartleby is a hypnotizing 5.30-minute psych jam that progresses with a puzzling
and darkwavish cadence. The color is black, the tone is sinister, and the male/female
vocals have a creepy timbre. Think British nightdreamers The Underground Youth.

Fascinating.

7. ‘All I See Is Trouble’ by BEATOWLS (Liverpool, UK)

All I See Is Trouble is part of the band’s brand new, intriguing album Marma.

The Liverpool’s cult synth-noir outfit bewitch with this mystifying slow-moving trip. Meditative male/female vocals and cinematic synths augment the chilling trip-hop vibe. Trance-like sonority. References? Massive Attack and Portishead. I know, big names.

8. ‘Grace’ by IDLES (Bristol, UK)

The Bristol indie punk mavericks have album #5, named Tangk out on 16 February 2024.
This new cut is a bittersweet ballad. Idles show their soft side here and it sounds great.

9. ‘Falling Tooth’ by HANGING FREUD (Glasgow, UK)

This darkwave synth duo from Glasgow-based have their
7th album out, named Worship. Stream it here.

Falling Tooth is one of the standout tracks. A synth riff rotates throughout with
an eerie resonance. It boggles your mind and psyche. The vocals accentuate the
obscure atmosphere even more. Striking score.

10. ‘Mood Pills’ by THE DREAM EATERS (Brooklyn, New York)

I love the way these New Yorkers descibe themselves:
The Carpenters meet Slayer. Hilarious.

“At face value our new song “Mood Pills” simply refers to a pill one takes to enhance their mood. The song deals with what that does to a relationship – how it affects the overall dynamic of a relationship when one person is taking a mood-altering drug. Though love and drugs are common songwriting topics, I wanted to take a stab at writing about a different side of that – namely, the sexual dysfunction that comes from taking psychiatric drugs.”

And yes, on Mood Pills I hear echoes of the legendary pop duo The Carpenters‘ musings, but less sugary and them singing about taking mood-changing drugs back in the day is unthinkable. Oh, I think Slayer showed up too late to fuck up this explicit pearl.

This Italian punk-rock songwriter is gearing up for his
4th album, ‘Life Burns‘ set for release on 1 March 2024.

Ahead of it, you can go bonkers to his new single Off My Chest

De La Vega: “The way interactions shape the way we are, especially in the formative years, is often under-looked. It took me a while to understand that some features of my personality exist and to face them openly, to be outspoken and verbal about them felt immediately redemptive and even liberating during the writing of the lyrics.”

Holy smoke! Off My Chest is a hurly-burly glam stormer. Wham bloody wham bam it goes while De La Vega exorcizes his demons. Riffs fly all over the place and make you want to start a one-man moshpit.

2. ‘It’s Not A Phase’ by STRIKE TWELVE (San Diego)

Long-running San Diego/Temecula gunslingers return
with a new head-over-heels steamroller It’s Not A Phase.

“We joke around that when people like our wives first met us, they thought the band was a temporary phase. Now, decades later, we’re still going strong. While being in a band has great potential to be disruptive to the rest our lives, it is in fact the glue that holds us together.”

This easily could be a bonus track on Blink-182‘s new LP One More Time. This haymaker’s head-spinning velocity has a similar rapid-fire and breakneck dash. Dive in, go nuts.

3. ‘Standing In The Sun’ by THE CREATURE APPEAL (West Midlands, UK)

These young swirling wolves have all punk burners and rock cylinders on. Fast-forward all the way. No breaks, no brakes, no mistakes. Ablaze drum/bass, manic riffs, agitated vocals and a blistering chorus combine for a fiery flamethrower that tests your stereo’s flexibility.

4. ‘Petroleum’ by YARD ACT (Leeds, UK)

British indie rockers Yard Act went to the indie top in
no time, last year with their ace debut LP The Overload.

Album number two, titled Where’s My Utopia? shows up on 1 March 2024.

Petroleum is the 2nd single. A lazy funky-bass and hip-shaking sucker-punch.

James Smith (frontman) “I lost it with the crowd in Bognor Regis and told them I was bored and I didn’t want to be there,” frontman James Smith said in a statement about the song. Me and Ryan [Needham] had a row after, and Ryan rightly dressed me down for the way I acted. It got me pondering the idea that, now this is a job, what are the requirements of it? People think they want honesty but they don’t, they want me to portray the version of honesty that they’ve paid to see and that’s part of the illusion.”

5. ‘Tunnel Lights’ by CHELSEA WOLFE (US)

The Californian Goth diva has canned her 7th full length, titled
She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. It’ll arrive next
year on 9 February.

Tunnel Lights is the 3rd piece from the forthcoming LP, Wolfe offers us.

Wolfe: “‘Tunnel Lights’ is about actually living instead of just ‘getting by.
It’s about waking up to the fact that you’ve been languishing in the dark
and it’s time to start taking steps towards the lights that’ll guide you out
of the tunnel-cave.”

6. ‘Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi’ by LOGAN’S CLOSE (Scotland)

It’s the title track of the quality-crafted debut album by this Scottish baroque pop duo.

It evolves slowly from a sepia-colored Beirut vibe with heartfelt organ fragments
to a highly emotive post-break-up cry out that stirs heart and soul. Stellar achievement.

7. ‘Better Than Before’ by TOY CAR (Liverpool)

This fresh captivating Liverpool act shines with chilling verve and impassioned flair
on this electrifying power ballad with its stupendous vocals and its mighty imposing
chorus. Better than before is an astonishing stonker of a song.

8. ‘Real Life’ by KIIRSTIN MARILYN (NYC)

Having lost her eldest brother in May of 2021 NYC-based songstress Kiirstin Marilyn
has written an extremely personal yet universal 6-track EP, titled Kristoffer that will
take listeners on a heartfelt journey through a spectrum of emotions. With soulful lyrics, unforgettable melodies, and a raw, emotive delivery, this EP is a testament to the power
of storytelling through music. Stream it here.

Real Life is one of the breathtaking highlights. A sky-scraping vocal tour de force. Combined with the mind-blowing guitar play the emotionality runs high. Music can be a healing force. I hope it works for Marilyn.

People Who Aren’t There Anymore and lands on 26 January.

Last week they dropped another new piece titled The Fight.

10. ‘Too Late’ by Catherine Campbell (Chattanooga, Tennessee)

Singer-songwriter Campbell displayed her moving vocal warmth before and she does one again on Too Late. A magnificent musing with both subtle and charming acoustic guitar sparks, tender piano touches, and angelic backing vocals near the end. High-quality songwriting. Don’t miss this tender little pearl.

1.’Shame’ by LNC (Nottingham, UK)

British band formed in Nottingham in 2016, based upon
a childhood dream and driving ambition to write music
from four school mates

These British gunslingers’ new single is a track inspired by how it feels to be
young and in a constant losing battle to survive in such a competitive world.

Frontman Josh Price roars all over this striking stroke. Shame is a wham bloody wham bam punk fireball. His voice resembles Artcic Monkey’s Alex Turner voice a bit, not his present crooner’s one, but rather his young angry man’s one. LNC is another post-Brexshit band (think Bar Italia, Deadletter, Lmabrini Girls, Ditz, Silverbacks, and several more) that produces turbulent turmoil in these tumultuos times, that reflects their worried state of mind caused by today’s merciless rat race.

2. ‘The Knock’ by FEEDER (UK)

Welsh veteran rockers FEEDER – Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose as key
members – drop a new LP, their 12th, a double one, titled Black/Red
on 5 April 2024.

One of the new share track, THE KNOCK is a straightforward,
hefty post-grunge rocker with a huge chorus.

3. ‘The King’ by SAFARI ROOM (Nashville, TN)

Safari Room is the indie rock outfit and brainchild of
Alec Koukol. Omaha-native, now a Nashville-local.

A new album is canned and named ‘Time Devours All Things’.
It lands next year, on February 23rd.

Newest single The King is an ongoing-charged groover driven by a mindbending non-stop bass riff that clashes now and then with a frantic guitar but never backs down. Koukol‘s storytelling vocals complete the stellar sonic picture.

4. ‘Beside Myself’ by THE 76 CLUB (UK)

Formed in 2022, in Burton-Upon-Trent, England The 76 Club are a 5 -piece alternative rock outfit. Combining ethereal guitar tones with punchy, bass ridden choruses, the group are certainly not afraid to demonstrate their various individual influences.

‘Beside Myself’ is all about the uncertainty that comes with breaking up with someone
and the rollercoaster of emotions, wondering if it was the right decision. The lyrics capture
the vulnerability and the longing for closure. It’s a relatable and heartfelt song that
many people can connect with.

Beside Myself is only their second piece. It’s a fiery cry out whit the guitar and bass
amps turned up and the band’s front Amazon adds vocal fervency, especially
on the flustered chorus. Bingo! Btw, is that Debbie Harry on the single’s artwork?

5. ‘West End Girls’ by SLEAFORD MODS (Nottingham, UK)

The mods will have a new limited-edition 7″ single out next month – pre-order info here – with all profits going to Shelter, an organization that helps people with housing issues and homelessness.

For the occasion they covered Pet Shop Boys‘s
gigantic hit West End Girls (more than 245 million
streams on Spotify).

6. ‘Brambles’ by FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES (UK)

Frank Carter about this second new shared track: “Brambles is a melancholic bop born
from the bramble thorns of love we let grow around us until we are tangled with no method
of escaping unscathed.”

Again we hear the romantic side of Carter, delivered
with avid heart-and-soul passion. Impressive.

7.’Globe’ by IRINA IMME (London, UK)

This London-based songstress wrote, in her short musical journey so far, already
250+ songs. Wow, The Beatles fabricated only 1988 tunes in their 10-year career.

Globe is a standout track from her versatile new 6-track EP Blue Forever. Her third. The song is a haunting tale of a lost soul navigating the ups and downs of life. It’s a heartfelt mood swing piece, going forth and back with Imme‘s emotive voice shining in the middle.

8. ‘Feel Me’ by GIRL WITH A HAWK (Boston, MA)

Girl with Hawk is an American rock band formed
in 2021 and led by musician Linda S. Viens.

The song is dedicated to Justine Covault, the founder of
Boston‘s Red On Red Records who passed away last summer.

Viens: “I can’t say that we have closure yet; as it has only been six months since we lost Justine, but I would say that the way the song seems to embody our heartache, and at the same time confirm that our relationship is still a living them, whether you believe that or not, does bring some comfort.”

Music, as we know, has a healing power. Hopefully, the electrifying guitar energy at work here and Viens‘ poignant vocals can have that healing impact on everybody involved, family and friends, in this tragedy.

9. ‘Lovers‘ by PILLS FOR TOMORROW (Grenoble, France)

This fresh French band cites shoegaze and neo-psychedelica and
related bands such as BJM, My Bloody Valenne, Mogwai and Spacemen 3
as influences.

Lovers is one of the two cuts on their debut EP, titled Castle Rock.

It’s a dreamy and smoothly progressing jam that grows slowly but surely in
intensity and anxiety along its exhilarative path caused by inflamed guitars
going while singer Nathalie Valion‘s vocals float all over it.

10. ‘Roadrunner Vs. Your Mother by THE MAGIC CITY (Boston, MA)

The Magic City is a new Boston-based rock band.

Roadrunner Vs. Your Mother is a provocative debut offering,
with roots that stretch from Britpop to post-punk to glam to
classic alternative.

It’s an amplified, melancholic-sounding reverie that triggers your daydreaming moments.
Its astounding guitar-infused and vivid vocals/harmonies coloured chorus takes the song to a zippy level. Splendid debut!

1. ‘Weather Warning’ by LEISURE FM (Poland-born / London-based)

Leisure FM are twins Milena & Weronika, born in Poland, who lived in Wales as
children and now calling South East London home. Driven by late-night contemplation
and experimental spirit, they started producing music in their bedrooms a few years
back to combat lockdown blues, alongside DJing regularly.

They just released one of the most notable debut EPs of 2023. Stream fables here.

Weather Warning is the opener and sets the tone for Leisure FM’s sensual and enigmatic sound. It’s a trippy vibe that circles around a bewitching beat and subtle guitar sparks. Midway, a surprising, 15-second classical strings/flute fragment comes on before that mesmeric beat returns. Magnetic piece.

2. ‘Fear Of Living’ by THE LEMONHEADS (US)

After almost 4 decades of wayward pop tunes with his band, THE LEMONHEADS and
some solo records EVAN DANDO (born in Massachusetts, now aged 56) is still around.

He co-wrote Fear Of Living last year, with the late
frontman Dan Lardner of NYC’s indie band QTY.

It’s a jangly jingle with Dando‘s
voice resonating quite low.

3. ‘Lunar Eclipse’ by THE VACCINES (London)

British guitar pop idols THE VACCINES have their new, sixth full-length,
baptized Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations out on 12 January 2024.

Lunar Eclipse is the 3rd shared single.

Another ridiculously catchy tune from these catchy tunesmiths.

4. ‘The Background’ by OK PANDA (Belgium)

The Background is the Belgian band’s 3rd single of the year. It highlights the challenges
of mental health and feelings of being lost in modern life. The single explores the inner struggle of a person who feels lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, through metaphors related to the film world, and who desperately tries to find his/her place in
a world that moves too fast.

Sonically bouncy guitars and the harmonies colored chorus create, despite the delicate content, a brisk and jaunty flow that seems to suggest that there’s still a light shining at
the end of the tunnel.

5. ‘Like That’ by THE RODA LITS (Belgium)

It’s been 5 years since this Belgian garage guitar indies released
their debut album Common Specimen/Indoor Mold.

But they’re back now, and they didn’t lose their electrical mojo nor their stompin’ swagger. Cracking drums, afire guitars and tense vocals are what you get. Don’t miss their return.

6. ‘Loverman’ by LOCAL BLOOD (Lithuania)

Local Blood is a dystopian post-punk band from Vilnius, Lithuania. They just released their 2nd, intriguing, eight-song album named Loverman revealing a multi-layered, even more mature, more complex sound. Thematically it reflects experiences of a man in the 90s, in the troubled Lithuania of that time. Stream/buy  here.

The ominous guitar-riff/drum driven title track has both an impassionate and mysterious sonority mostly caused by the creepy vocals and grows in intensity along its eerie way.

7. ‘The Great Upheaval’ by “THE ALTER KRAKERS (Canada)

This loose, careening, ’70s rock ‘n’ roll inspired trio wrote this track, inspired by
The Great Upheaval Art Exhibitt at the AGO in Toronto, the song is told from the perspective of Russian/French painter Marc Chagal in the first verse “I made my
name as a painter; I helped create a new style, and we changed the landscape for a
while” and then Picasso in the second verse: “I’ll put your ass on a canvas, cut you
into cubes; they’ll know your name but never recognize you.”

Expect Mona Lisa to be part of a riff-roaring rock ripper.

8. ‘The Hard Way’ by JIANTS (Toronto, Canada)

Blending a love of 90’s alt-rock with modern indie sensibilities, Jiants
is a Toronto-based group led by ex-pro skateboarder Jesse Landen.

They have a brand-new full-length out, named Tall Tales. Stream it here.

The uplifting title track is basically a classic ‘get your girl back’ song. It’s about realizing you have a special bond with someone and deciding whether to step forward with them or leave each other behind forever. It’s from the perspective of someone feeling uncertain but offering up their full commitment this time.

A frisky and captivating tune that your ears will embrace on the spot.

9. ‘Good Lookin’ Liars’ by THE BLIPS (Birmingham, Alabama)

This seasoned Alabama rock team just released their
2nd lonplayer, baptized Again. Stream it here.

I don’t know if ‘Good Lookin’ Liars‘ is an autobiographical song, but what I do now is that it has enough jangly riffs and a banging chorus beat that’ll boost your state of mind instantly. I suppose you know where to find the repeat button.

10. ‘In The Middle’ by RAVEEN (Montreal)

In The Middle is the first song these Canadians have released in over three years.

Lyrically, the song is a warning not to get too close. Written as one voice speaking to another, the song documents the feeling of desiring closeness while nonetheless knowing that you are changing and evolving. This song tries to provide a snapshot of the emotions we feel in those moments when love and growth fight for dominance in our lives.

It’s an intimate, vulnerable, yet tender musing that brought
the touching voice of Perfume Genius to my mind.

1. ‘May I Comply’ by HEARTWORMS (London)

Up and fast-coming artist Jojo Orme and her musical vehicle Heartworms is shooting to the top as a comet. It started with her ace EP A Comfort Notion and she follows it now with this new titillating single. A funky guitar pop pearl with a repetitive riff that creeps under your skin in an eye blink and sensual vocals that stick on the spot. Awesome.

2. ‘Meditation’ by INFADER (Belgium)

Infader is the band of Belgian singer-songwriter Michaël Denis who produce heavy rock with a dramatic flair. In a culture of musical over-simplification they add nuance to rock as we know it. Emotionally layered and transforming music, without the essence of the catchy song to lose sight of.

On Meditation, they storm fast-forward from the get-go with fierce guitars, pounding drumming and feverish vocals. A rapid-fire ripper that turns you dizzy. Sassy stroke!

3. ‘Lords’ by BARBARISM (Manchester, UK)

Wow! What a smoking debut this is. Lords is a powerhouse hammer blow for fanatic headbangers with a guitar riff that drives you crazy and vocals that make your ears
vibrate.

Barbaric stuff.

6. ‘Say It Like You Mean It’ by SLEATER-KINNEY (Washington)

Washington‘s longtime rollin’ pop-punk indies, a duo now with Carrie
Brownstein and Corin Tucker, have their new, 10th LP, baptized Little
Rope out on 19 January 2024.

Ahead of it we can enjoy this new sizzling single.

7. ‘Hiding’ by HAZE (Ghent, Belgium)

After playing with some bands, Belgian musician Mirabelle van de Put decided
in 2021 to go solo under the moniker of HAZE. Her excellent self-titled debut LP appeared the same year.

She’ll have her sophomore one, titled Out of Sight, out in January.

Hiding is the first single. A glinstering dream pop musing featuring sparkling guitar and smooth bass play, and van de Put‘s enticing voice takes you on a relaxing trip that flares up now and then.

The eye-catching video is created by Naomi Kerkhove.

8. ‘The Horrible Things’ by SARASARA (France)

Sarasara is a French avant-garde performance artist and
songwriter who launches her third album Elixir on March 1st.

The album’s potent mix of cultural ideas fuses with dark industrial synths and gothic atmospherics to shape her intoxicating, cinematic sophisti-pop. Enthralling, groove-laden compositions recall the likes of David Bowie and Jehnny Beth, but Sarasara found more influence in political writers; Bell Hooks, the distinguished professor of race and class, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, a French socialist, and the first person to declare himself an anarchist, and Édith Thomas, the French novelist and bisexual pioneer of women’s
history, among others.”

First single The Horrible Things is an enigmatic slo-mo reverie with an addictive
beat and Sarasara‘s near-whispering voice creating a ghostly atmosphere.

9. ‘The Turtle’ by DOCTOR, DOCTOR (Oakland, CA)

This Oakland trio has a new 4-track EP, named Second Opinion out.

Closer ‘The Turtle’ kept playing in my head after a couple of spins. First thing that came to mind was the acoustic guitar play of Jimmy Page on Led Zep‘s classic Stairway To Heaven because of its bewitching resonance. And I’ll throw in another big name. Think Jethro Tull
on a mellow moment. Well, judge for yourself.

10. ‘My Story’ by HANI ABADI (San Francisco)

This multi-instrumentalist and composer from San Francisco
releases his debut album ‘Tiamat‘ on November 30th.

My Story, the second shared track, is a moody and emotional ballad that makes you silent and triggers melancholic thoughts. It attempts to convey the complexity of a relationship and its profound effect on someone’s life. The song is meant to console and offer hope during the darkest days.

The accompanying video captures these raw emotions, featuring claymation characters. This nostalgic style is reminiscent of music videos from the late 90s and early 2000s.

A fanatical flare-up that speeds towards a monstrous climax. Who needs
humans when robots kick ass this knife-edged way.

On 1 March 2024 industrial rock hot rod Al Jourgensen and his band

makes a lot of noise about it.

3. ‘Sabretooth Monkey’ by MY OCTOPUS MIND (Bristol, UK)

Last week these English misfits released their new
turbulent album Trying To Be Normal. Stream it here.

Closer Sabetrooth Monkey is one of the highlights. A viciously funky bass-driven shocker that does your head in with its maddening mid-tempo beat. The ominous chorus with its metallic guitar aggression adds even more fervent furor to this brainbreaker. Touchdown.

4. ‘Losing My Faith’ by ELECTRIC CIRCUS (Newcastle, UK)

EC: “It’s about the trials and tribulations of modern day life and how no matter who
you are or where you come from, we all have our own personal battles that we’re fighting.
It’s ideally a message of hope, and tries to convey that no matter who you are, we’re all in
this together and we’re all just trying to hold on to our faith, and not to lose it when times
get tough or big changes come around.”

Losing My Faith rumbles, rattles, and roll from the kick-off. Afire guitars,
bashing drumming, and hopped-up vocals going paranoiac on the titanic
chorus. A crackerjack stroke. Trust me, you can have faith in this band.

5. ‘A Little To Well’ by DEGREES (Sweden)

This Swedish duo just dropped their first album in 10 years. It’s called Pt. V

“With their love for captivating melodies and soft synths, Degrees continue
where they left off; epic, poetic melancholy with reveling pop rhythms, enriched
with a little drive from the early 80ies Synthpop and modern Shoegaze.”

A Little To Well is a sizzling stunner, a supersonic missile, sounding like a falbbergasting
post-punk symphony loaded with frenetic guitars, frantic synths, flaring duet vocals and
an amazeballs chorus. Yeah!

6. ‘Personal Jesus’ by TREVOR HORN and IGGY POP

British famous singer-songwriter-producer Trevor Horn (now 74),
who scored a No 1 UK hit in 1979 with his one-time project Buggles
and their pop tune Video Killed The Radio Star is about to release an
album of covers.

One of the covered songs is Personal Jesus, the 24-carat Depeche Mode classic from 1990. Horn invited eternal punk IGGY POP to do the singing. An inch-perfect decision. At the age of 76, he still bites like he wants to be your dog. His performance here is bone-chilling.

7. ‘Kurt Cobain’ by SAM HUNN from Verticoli (Australia)

The track is about emotional turmoil, something that worked as a burden on the late great Kurt Cobain‘s psyche. Hunn translated this confused state of mind into a droning grunge sucker-punch that races with illegal speed.

It has some mind-bending boogie-woogie piano play that’s surrounded by mental guitars and Hunn‘s flipped-out vocals. The huge chorus does the rest. Smells like a bewildering Cobain tribute.

8. ‘Sitcom’ by WIESINGER (Alberta, Canada)

Justin Wiesinger about Sitcom: “Sometimes life feels like a “Sitcom.” Minus the audience laugh tracks. This song is super tongue in cheek silly, but I think it has a humanity and a certain depth to it that can make you, the listener, squirm and really think deeply about your own life.”

These are the kind of frolicsome and upbeat pop tunes always welcome on my headphones in these worrying times. It’s a tremendously infectious and an inspiringly charming earworm. Sunbeams for Fall. Sing along, hum along, whistle along. Always believe in a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

9. ‘Now And Then’ by THE BEATLES

A previously unreleased John Lennon song, titled Now And Then,
billed as the last song by The Beatles was released last week.

Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr worked on the 1979 demo while
compiling The Beatles Anthology in the mid-’90s featuring ‘new’ songs Free As A Bird
and Real Love, but didn’t finish it.

Now, using advanced technology and a curatorial touch, McCartney
and Starr have completed what they started with George, and turned
it into a fully orchestrated pearl of a love song.

10. ‘Take It All Away’ by GISELLE AND ERIK (US)

Originally from Orlando and Gainesville, FL and currently based in Nashville, TN, Giselle and Erik are a husband-and-wife duo. Their genre-crossing style melds their roots in folk and jazz. Each of them songwriters, Giselle and Erik offer their audiences a collection of original music that pairs Giselle’s warm, lyrical voice and mellow piano with the sweet sounds of Erik’s jazz and classical guitar.

After experiencing a life-or-death medical surgery, the pair found comfort in
music with the release of their brand new affectional EP, fittingly called Healing.

Opening track Take It All The Way is my favourite. A romantic and uplifting beauty
with marvellous acoustic guitar play, subtle piano touches and blissful vocals.
Think Angel Olsen/Emmilou Harris.

2. ‘All The Times’ by GAE VINCI remixed by THE KVB

Sicilian musician/producer Gae Vinci released his top-notch debut album
Lonely Ballads last May, mixing electronica, psychedelia and electric shoegaze
layers.

To keep the momentum going, renowned British darkwave duo The KVB remixed
All The Times, one of the album’s highlights. Their atmospheric approach adds a heart-warming Depeche Mode-esque vibe.

The accompanying, eye-catching video was an idea of Gae Vinci, who
chose and edited clips, transposing into visual The KVB‘s sound.

3. ‘Swan’ by KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD (Australia)

Last Friday these ridiculously productive psych-prog rockers from down under unleashed their 25th album in 13 years. Hallelujah. On The Silver Cord they swapped guitars for electronica.

Darkplace is a mysterious new Swedish dark dream pop/post-punk group who

6. ‘Ghostwriter’ by STRESS DOLLS (Buffalo, NY)

Stress Dolls is the moniker of American alt/pop/rock artist Chelsea O’Donnell.

Ghostwriter is the 2nd single off her upcoming debut album.

“There are many times where I don’t really know what a song is about until long after
I write it, and “Ghostwriter” was no exception. I came to recognize it as a metaphor about my relationship to anxiety: I want to be the narrator of my own story, but there are lots of times where I feel like my anxious feelings take the reins, even if I don’t want them to. I take the credit, or blame, for my own actions, but the metaphor of anxiety as a ‘ghostwriter’ felt fitting to me.”

Ghostwriter is a speedy, shivering and steamrollin’ indie pop tune with
some surprisingly exciting violin play embedded in an guitar-driven flair.

7. ‘It Goes On’ by WAASH

8. ‘You Be Good’ by ARIH SK (Ontario, Canada)

Arih SK is an artist living and working in St. Catharines, Ontario. He’s known for writing short, slightly upbeat songs with simple melodies about loss, nostalgia, family, and relationships.

“This song is inspired by Alex The Parrot, who was part of the avian learning experiment. He could tell between different colours and shapes, could count, and he was the first non-human animal to have ever asked a question (what colour am I?). Sadly, the experiment was abruptly ended by Alex’s untimely death. The chorus of the song borrows Alex’s last words, which were the same words he said at the end of every day’s session: “You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow. My daughter Olive sings on this track with me.

‘You Be Good’ is a sweet, tender and catchy father/daughter lullaby. Lovely!

9. ‘The End Of Apathy’ by TEJON STREET CORNER THIEVES (US)

This US outlaw alt-folk group have come a long way since their humble beginnings when they used to busk for loose change, actually taking their name from a time when they were accused of stealing a corner on Tejon Street in their home city of Colorado Springs during a turf war between rival buskers.

Last week they released their brand new
full length, baptized Juxtaposition.

The End Of Apathy is one of the stand out tracks on the record.
A punky folk chant fueled with manic mandolin riffage.

and Irish music producer Jacknife Lee launch their debut LP Los Angeles
on November 3.

This 3rd appetizer is another dancefloor knockout
with Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock on vocals.

4. ‘R.E.T.R.O.’ by SAM SHERDEL (Sheffield, UK)

Sherdel: “”R.E.T.R.O” was written in 2021 after the initial lockdowns. It’s a bittersweet pop record which contains the message to appreciate what you have whilst you have it, as the moment it’s gone is the moment it hurts.”

This is the kind of song that your ears embrace on first hearing. An impassioned
riff ripper with an effervescent tempo, feverish vocals – think Stereophonics‘ dynamizing voice Kelly Jones – and a puissant refrain, think the vivid drive of Americana hero John Mellencamp. Touchdown!

The British gutter punk 4-piece have their 12th single out, since hitting the scene in 2019.

“It’s a song about survival, a song that kicks back against the shame imposed on all of us who are scraping by in an ongoing and worsening cost of greed crisis. You do what you have to survive, and how dare anyone in a position of privilege look down their nose.”

House Of Pain is a chaotic slash and smash haymaker, a left/right uppercut, with schizophrenic guitars, crazed drumming, and a vocalist that screams his lungs out.

Stockholm‘s circles around a trance-inducing, magnetic riff – think Yo La Tengo – and
rings deliriously on the chorus with vitalizing vocals. Top-notch score!

9. ‘Lie’ by MILLIE MILNER & THE DEADNAMES (Manchester, UK)

Beginning as a solo project and growing into a band, Millie Milner & The Deadnames
of Manchester, UK was forged with a stronger mission at the heart…to be the queer representation that the band’s members struggled to find in their own teenage years.

Edi Milner (frontperson): “For me the band is all about the bigger picture. It’s more
than music, it’s a home for people like us that often struggle to find a place to fit in.”

Lie was inspired by a breakup of Milner’s and co-penned by a friend, “lie” tells of
a need to take ownership of their life and their choices and the newfound element
of fun and recklessness they found themselves surrounded by as a newly single
person.

It’s indie at its vivid best. Sparkling guitars going berserk now and then, firm

A couple of weeks ago Deap Vally, one of the best bands of the past 10 years
according to my ears and eyes, announced the end of their amazing journey.

They’ll say farewell with an extensive tour starting next month (all dates here),
a new vinyl edition of their debut LP Sistrionic (pre-order here), and this new
smashing version of their smashing single from that smashing debut album.

2. ‘TK421’ by LENNY KRAVITZ (NYC)

Superstar LENNY KRAVITZ (born Leonard Albert Kravitz in New York City
59 years ago) returns next year – 15 March 2024 – with his 12th album,
a double one, baptized Blue Electric Light.

Lead single ‘TK421’ is a 24-Carat funky rocker.

On the accompanying video Kravitz shakes a lot of bare body parts.

3. ‘Flutter On Your Signal’ by DEAD ANYWAY (Gloucester, UK)

I discovered this two outspoken and life-observing duo – Kate Arnold (lyrics/vocals)
and Marc Symonds (beats/instruments) only last week after on the occasion of an interview with politics driven, American punk poet Joshua Baumgarten of Dutch rock unit The Irrational Library.

Dead Anyway produces the very post-punk turmoil and
society-critical stories that I have loved since I was born.

Flutter On Your Signal comes from their new 4-track EP B-Sides And Oddities.
It’s a synth-shoving and drum-beating groover with turbulent spoken-word
vocals rolling over it. Think The Stone Roses‘ 1989 pysch jam Fools Gold. Yes,
that good.

“The song is a poignant reminder of the black hole the mainstream media and commercial

The song pulls together speaker, ripping guitar tones, driving bass lines, thumping drums and waving synthesisers for a very floaty vocal to sail on top of to hopefully fine you a channel that’s for you.”

This addictive LSD snorter invites you to channel your restless thoughts. It’s spiraling tempo, layered orchestration, poppy harmonies, afire guitars and zippy chorus combine for an amplified, psychedelic triumph.

and last summer’s Obscura and no signs of a pause yet.

Black Angel is a sky-scraping standout of a song, with Smith‘s astonishing voice
as the hero in the middle. This impassioned doozy bursts with expressive emotion
and stirring sensibility. Bluesy, soulful, guitar-crazy Americana. I’m sure God added
it to his divine Spotify playlist.

7. ‘POV’ by VIA CROWE (US)

Only 17, only 3 songs out (the first one last July), and already making
a huge impression, sonically and vocally. It’s a quite rare experience.

Crowe is definitely going places. POV is a splendid pop-flavored
rocker with a gloriously full-on sonority throughout.Top!

8. ‘Disregard’ by FULVETTA (Dublin, Ireland)

Fulvetta are a Dublin-based 4-piece. They imbibe influences from a variety of
genres and bands without being in hock to them – dreamy, reverb-laden shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine, classic 90s era Smashing Pumpkins and fuzzed up
noise from the likes of Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.

Disregard is a bittersweet shoegaze symphony going sky-high, propelled by layers
of guitar commotion after a dreamy intro. This sonic process repeats it itself with
dense intensity and grows towards a rhapsodic finale. Magnificent.

9. ‘Thorazine Bender’ by INSTANT SMILE (Philadelphia)

Philly‘s DIY rockers, husband-wife (guitarist Greg Phoenix and drummer Erin Berry)
draw influences from 60s and 70s era pop, classic rock, psych, and prog, and reformulate them into a thoughtful, satisfying, modern – and unique – take on rock and roll.

They just dropped a new, 4-track EP, titled 4 X 2

Opener Thorazine Bender is a blues-rock ripper spiced with rockabilly
guitar electricity, rattling drums, and edged vocals. I hear white stripes vibes
in my ears.

10. ‘All I Die For’ by SWiiMS (Toronto, Canada)

“The songs is about the beginning stages of a relationship, how you try to make yourself more intriguing or impressive than you are in order to keep that person interested. It also describes the feeling of hopefulness, bliss and loss of control that the start of any new relationship brings.”

No it’s not a new single from British shoegaze heroes Slowdive‘s brand new LP, but my ears tell me that All I Die For has the quality to be part of it. The breezy combination of shiny synths, radiant guitars, floating melodiousness and the whispering vocals will reveal why I made that comparison.

1. ‘In Slow Motion’ by EX-HYENA (Boston, US)

“The music of Ex-Hyena – Reuben Bettsak and Bo Barringer – has often
explored our collective sense of being through hyper-specific moments.
But if we were granted the ability to slow those moments down, would we
react differently, and would we have a greater or lesser understanding of
what transpires before us? That’s at the core of the Boston dystopian
dance-pop duo’s new single and video.”

Reuben Bettsak: “Things seem to move so fast sometimes and it’s hard to savor moments,
or understand a magical day, a traumatic event, a breakup or a fight, etc. It’s kind of the whole imagining life as a movie where you could replay things in slow motion – with other psychedelic effects for good measure.”

In Slow Motion is the lead single of the duo’s forthcoming, third album ‘A Kiss of the Mind’. Expect dark-synth-wave pizazz at its haunting best. Booming beats rotate on and on towards a full orchestral plangency while shadowy vocals add even more sinister vibes.

2. ‘Set’ by KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD (Australia)

The Aussie psych-prog-rockers announced their 25th LP in 13 years.
Their second of 2023. I don’t know when they sleep, or what meds
they take but their productivity is off the charts.

The new one is called The Silver Cord
and comes our way on 27 October.

One of the pieces they already shared is Set.
Psychedelic disco for the wicked.

3. ‘Fourth Pass Over The Graveyard’ (UNKLE Reconstruction) by THE BLACK DELTA MOVEMENT (Kingston-Upon-Hull, UK)

TBDM has a new 5-track EP, titled In Acetate, out on November 17th. More info here.

One of the pieces is a remix by UNKLE (the musical act of veteran trip-hop hero James Lavelle) of February single Fourth Pass Over The Graveyard. Expect psychedelia in slo-mo with Stone Roses‘s Fools Gold echoes, fuzzy vocals and spacey rhythms.

4. ‘Newdance’ by HUNGRY BOYS (Kyiv, Ukraine)

Newdance is the title track of the duo’s brand-new EP. Stream/buy it here.

It’s about non-stop burning matches and circles around and around pushed
by a mind-boggling synth riff creeping in your head faster than you can say
Fuck Putin. It’s stroboscope electro that gets you in a trance for 5 and a half

5. ‘Dark Angel’ by SUSU (New York)

Boasting power vocals and a rippin’ guitar riff, she’s a pleaser and a teaser dealing pure punk out your speakers. This is the hand; a perfect play for lovers, an ex, or one night stand.”

Punk-pop fireworks at work. Dark Angel rattles and rolls with energetic elan and greedy guitars and flares up when the tempestuous chorus hits your ears. Desirous vocals complete this roaring ripper.

6. ‘Hell’ by SLEATER-KINNEY (Olympia, Washington)

Washington‘s indie-pop-punk Grrrls share their 10th LP,
named Little Rope with the world on 19 January 2024.

Hell is the first single. A blood-curdling roller coaster of a song.

7. ‘Same Old Story’ by READ THE ROOM (Norwich, UK)

This British 5-piece just released their high-spirited 5-track debut EP,
titled A Place Like No Other. Stream here.

Same Old Story is a standout track. Think Garbage‘s Shirley Manson
rockin’ out with freaked-out guitars flying around her head.

8. ‘Safe’ by WIRE SPINE (Vancouver, British Columbia)

Wire Spine was formed in 2015 by Robert Katerwol of Weird Candle, and Jesi Tekahionwake. Following their 2018 debut album Bury Me Here they’re back now with new single Safe. An electro-pop stomper with New Order-like synth beats and seductive Tekahionwake vocals.

9. ‘Crown Of Thorns’ by THE SUBTHEORY (Los Angeles/Oxford)

At its core, Crown of Thorns delves into the concept of boundaries, those elusive lines
that define personal space and individuality. Singer Cate DeBu lyrical talent shines as she weaves a narrative that vividly portrays the dynamics of establishing and maintaining these boundaries.

It’s a smooth, soulful reverie with gentle and charming vocals
and a Portishead vibe. Sensuous, relaxing and appealing.
