SUEDE Released Their Masterpiece Album ‘ DOG MAN STAR’ 25 Years Ago…

Classics from the past…

10 October 2019

25 years ago, on 10 October 1994, British rockers SUEDE released their magnum opus DOG MAN STAR. Their second and final album with guitarist and co-songwriter Bernard Butler who left even before the final recordings were over. It’s a fabulous record with a series of outstanding songs that went much farther than the Britpop label. David Bowie and Roxy Music‘s glam and glitter influences were obvious but in the end it was a 100% Suede album in all its theatrical and melodramatic structure and resonance with Brett Anderson as the bona fide rock star in the middle. Definitely my favorite Suede LP.

All Music wrote: “As it stands, Dog Man Star is a strangely seductive record, filled with remarkable musical peaks, from the Bowie-esque stomp of “New Generation” to the stately ballads “The Wild Ones” and “Still Life,” which are both reminiscent of Scott Walker. And while Suede may choose to wear their influences on their sleeve, they synthesize them in a totally original way, making Dog Man Star a singularly tragic and romantic album.”

SUEDE Released Brand New Album ‘THE BLUE HOUR’ – Here’s NME’s Verdict….

22 September 2018

Iconic glam rockers SUEDE released their 8th studio album THE BLUE HOUR yesterday.
As Turn Up The Volume is still in the process to absorb the new longplayer (although after two spins I’ve already heard 4 tracks I wanna have on repeat with opener As One as the most impressive one!) at this very moment I’ll give you legendary British music website NME‘s verdict: “On their eighth album, Brett Anderson and co. take the road less travelled, exploring rural decay with cinematic lushness… While there’s a comforting familiarity that comes with all things Suede, it’s wonderfully shrouded on ‘The Blue Hour’ by a very new, romantic and alluring strangeness. These are not hits to shake your bits to. Nor will these
beats shake your meat. Rest assured, Suede remain the beautiful ones, but are just looking
for beauty in ever more curious places…”

SUEDE Launches Impressive Video Clip For New Intense Single ‘LIFE IS GOLDEN’ From Upcoming LP…

Brand new sonic impulses…

Glam legends SUEDE have shared an impressive clip for new single LIFE IS GOLDEN.
It was shot in Pripyat, the Ukrainian town that was abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Director Mike Christie revealed the story behind the video: “It’s not about the tragedy of
the disaster that happened all those years ago, it’s about the unstoppable force of life that’s consumed the desolate landscape left behind by humans. It seemed wonderfully apt to set
the song to cracked concrete, all conquered by towering golden trees.”

LIFE IS GOLDEN is vintage SUEDE.
Passionate, engrossing and cinematic.
Here’s the gripping video clip…

SUEDE Released Glamorous Debut Album 25 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

27 March 2018

ARTIST: SUEDE

ALBUM: SUEDE – debut LP

RELEASED: 29 March 1993 – 25 years ago

BBC MUSIC wrote: “Feted as the ‘best new band in Britain’ before they’d even released a single, Suede must surely be the one band of the Britpop pack who had to endure the most fallout from press. Yet, they survived. A large amount of this was because their debut album actually did live up to the noise. To be fair ‘Suede’ does carry its influences on its sleeve, but this was 1993 and post-modernism was the flavour du jour anyway. Suede’s main sources were Bowie and the Smiths. But the band had enough chutzpah and originality to weather the comparisons with ease. Bernard Butler’s awesome technique was the ace in the pack. Propelling three-minute bursts of pop perfection like “Metal Mickey” and “The Drowners” into the singles charts, the bands’ sham-glam reeked of a new kind of decadence, laced with black humour. The key text here is “Animal Nitrate”. Despite its punning title it’s a thrill-seeking slice of cynicism that perfectly summed up what it was like to be young and chemically imbalanced in the nation’s capital at the time. This was a foreshadow of Blair’s Britain. The way it sold (the fastest selling album of all time and straight in at number one) showed that the public not only believed the hype, they wanted it. All wrapped in androgyny and attitude, Suede delivered everything that we’d hoped for and more. Their fortunes were never to be as good again.”

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: Suede’s debut LP is their 2nd best next to magnum opus ‘Dog Man Star’. A fully loaded glam rollercoaster filled with a flashing quartet of four stunning singles and neo-romantic ballads. Exciting ride from start to finish.

THREE HIGHLIGHTS: Metal Micky / Animal Nitrate / The Drowners

* METAL MICKY

* ANIMAL NITRATE

Glam Rock Legends SUEDE Released Flamboyant Firecracker Single ‘ANIMAL NITRATE’ 25 Years Ago…

When timeless in sound and vision, it’s a …

quotefield-kopie

20 February 2018

Twenty-five years ago – on 22 February 1993 – British glam rockers SUEDE released one of their best tracks ever (to my ears). ANIMAL NITRATE was/still is an awesome firecracker. Glowing and flashy. Anthemic and towering! A top stroke! According to Chris Jones, BBC’s music journalist at the time, the song (with its reference to the inhalant drug amyl nitrite), was “despite its punning title, a thrill-seeking slice of cynicism that perfectly summed up what
it was like to be young and chemically imbalanced in the nation’s capital at the time”
.

It was the third single from their stupendous, self-titled debut LP, and charted
at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Here’s that fabulous beast…

Like his dad you know that he’s had
Animal nitrate in mind
Oh in your council home he jumped on your bones
now you’re taking it time after time

oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now your animal’s gone?

Well he said he’d show you his bed
and the delights of his chemical smile
so in your broken home he broke all of your bones
now you’re taking it time after time

oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now your animal’s gone?

what does it take to turn you on, on
now he has gone?
now you’re over 21?
now your animal’s gone?
animal, he was animal, an animal

SUEDE – Debut Single ‘THE DROWNERS’ Released 25 Years Ago…

When timeless in sound and vision…

‘The Drowners’ by SUEDE

After a bad start with Justine Frischmann on guitar – who came up with the band’s name and left frontman Brett Anderson and the group very soon for Blur‘s leader Damon Albarn, amazing guitarist Bernard Butler joined SUEDE and teamed up with Anderson to write the songs. And how! They appeared on the front cover of the former English magazine Melody Maker labeled as ‘The Best New Band In Britain‘ (1992) before they even released one note. record. The sudden press euphoria was based on their fresh and buzzing approach of pop music as well as their flashing charisma and sonic magnetism at gigs…

No more Madchester ecstasy, no more American macho grunge. Here was an incredibly ambitious, shiny and creative band with a different sound and a vibrant presence: sensual, adventurous, sexually ambiguous, romantic and gloomy at the same time. Oh yes, indeed, they were definitely inspired by their hero David Bowie and his provocative glam persona. Twenty-five years ago – 11 May 1992 – they released their debut single THE DROWNERS. The beginning of a new era, called Britpop, the rest is history…

Won’t someone give me a gun?
oh well it’s for my brother
well he writes the line wrote down my spine
It says “Oh do you believe in love there?”

So slow down, slow down, you’re taking me over
And so we drown, sir we drown, stop taking me over

Won’t someone give me some fun?
(and as the skin flies all around us)
We kiss in his room to a popular tune
Oh, real drowners

slow down, slow down, you’re taking me over
And so we drown, sir we drown,
stop takin’ me over!
