HÜSKER DÜ – Sixth & Final LP ‘WAREHOUSE: SONGS AND STORIES’ Released In 1987… Thirty Years Ago

Looking back in time. Memorable moments in sonic history!

‘Warehouse: Songs And Stories’
HÜSKER DÜ
Released 19 January 1987

huskerdu

Minneapolis noisemakers HÜSKER DÜ released WAREHOUSE: SONGS AND STORIES,
their sixth and final (double) album thirty years ago, on 19 January 1987. The highly praised, vigorous trio excelled in constructing turbulent, red-hot powerhouses fueled
with an army of multi-tracked guitars and imposing choruses. Their last effort was also packed with steamrollers. Like these smoking guns: Charity, Charity, Prudence And Hope / Standing In The Rain / Ice Cold Ice / Could You Be The One? / Tell You Why Tomorrow/ Actual Condition/ You Can Live At Home and promo single She’s A Woman (And Now He’s A Man) . Here’s a swirling appearance on the legendary American The Late Show…

The razor-sharp DIY punk attitude of the early days (‘Revolution starts at home, preferably in
the bathroom mirror
‘ was an uncredited quote on one of the inner sleeves) still was intact on Warehouse, musically as well as lyrically, although the production was way smoother and more polished than before. The competitive ego’s of Bob Mould and Grant Hart,
the DÜ’s two songwriters were a blessing for the ongoing creativeness during the group’s career (1979-1988) but, finally, in the end the chemistry went down the toilets and both wayward characters wanted to be in front all the time. So taking this backbreaking rivalry into account this double LP (20 songs) is quite a startling victory. A slashing goodbye with
a ruthless big bang. Press the button, turn it up, attack your ears…

PETER HOOK And ROWETTA Interpret JOY DIVISION’s ‘Atmosphere’ Magnificently…

coverblack

ATMOSPHERE is probably both the saddest and most beautiful JOY DIVISION track ever, released just before and after IAN CURTIS‘s tragic death (18 May 1980). A drama loaded and truly gripping electronic symphony with spine-tingling Curtis vocals. At first, in 1979, the Manchester band recorded a demo of the song, then called ‘Chance‘, for a London radio session. In March of 1980, the pearl was released, quite strangely, as a France-only single – by small record label Sordide Sentimental – with ‘Dead Souls’ as the B-side. Following the unfortunate passing of the troubled young frontman Atmosphere was re-released as a 12″ single by Joy Division‘s familiar label Factory with ‘She’s Lost Control‘ as the B-side. Here’s a version by original bass player PETER HOOK and his band THE LIGHT (still touring the world successfully with tremendous performances of New Order and Joy Divison classics) featuring the fabulous Rowetta (who recorded and toured a lot with Happy Mondays) on vocals, dating from a few years back. Enjoy the epic rendition here. Really magnificent!…

VANT – You Should Know Them By Now…

Clips that will impress your eyes and your ears…

VivaVideo

Steamy young indie rockers VANT, led by the socially committed Mattie Vant started to wake up the UK live scene by late 2014. They released a string of red-hot singles & EPs, toured Europe (I saw them playing a heated set in Brussels last year) and the UK again and are ready now to entertain us loudly with debut album ‘DUMB BLOOD‘. It will be out on February 17th, all details here . But first a fresh video for one of their best bursts so far. ‘DO YOU KNOW ME?’ is a song “about doing the things you hate in order to do the things you love, because of you guys we get to do the thing we love every single day!”. Here’s the fever…

‘Low’ by DAVID BOWIE
Released 14 January 1977

bowielow

The short, opening line I use for this ‘Classic‘ series – ‘When it’s timeless in sound & and vision, it’s a…‘ – refers, of course, to that remarkably synths driven electronic diamond SOUND AND VISION (originally recorded as an instrumental) on DAVID BOWIE‘s 11th LP LOW

… an adventurous, experimental, schizophrenic, uncommercial (certainly the second, almost claustrophobic & darkly instrumental side of the record, with ‘Warszawa‘ being actually one of my favorite tracks) and unintended tour de force. “I had no statement to make on Low” said The Thin White Duke afterwards in an interview. He was actually in a really bad shape at the time. Lots of drugs (“I blew my nose one day and half my brains
came out”
he later described, quite hilariously, his dangerous way of life) and other expensive excesses, while living in Los Angeles, led to mental, physical and financial problems and drove the late legend to a state of paranoia. We all know that many
artists produced their best work when their minds were about to explode and that’s
what probably happened here too I guess. Low was designed and written after Bowie‘s escape to West Berlin. It marked the first of three collaborations (followed by Heroes & Lodger, becoming the Berlin Trilogy, although Low was recorded in France) with sound virtuoso Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Here’s a great review by Pitchfork.
And press the button, if you want to experience, once again, the full sonic odyssey – originally released 40 years ago, on 14 January 1977 – here…

‘Oczy Mlody’ by FLAMING LIPS13 January 2017

flaminglips2

Wayne Coyne, the eccentric frontman of Oklahoma psychedelia explorers got himself a special 56th – on a Friday the 13th – birthday present with today’s release of THE FLAMING LIPS’ new spacey opus, titled OCZY MLODY. It’s certainly not a wild party album, not at all, rather a reflective promenade through the universe of one’s errant mind. A record to play after all guests are gone and one you want to discover alone, preferably in the dark like listing to the frogs with demon eyes. I know, a bit creepy. Start your adventurous trip here…
