MAGIC AND LOSS – Released 14 January 1992

loumagic

LOU REED (50 years old back then), started to work on his 16th solo album MAGIC AND LOSS with themes of magic in his head, after hearing stories about magicians in Mexico. But when tragedy occurred during the writing, the late New York City legend incorporated cutting thoughts and songs on mortality, loss and death as well. The illnesses and eventual deaths of two of his close friends caused by cancer – Doc Pomus, Reed‘s mentor when he started his career and a ‘Rita‘, assumed to be Rotten Rita, who also was a familiar figure
at Andy Warhol‘s studio ‘The Factory‘ in the early days – was obviously extremely hard to bear. In the end the album was more about loss than magic and not an easy one to listen to when you have experienced the same kind of feelings, which I did last year when I saw my father being tortured mercilessly by that awful disease. Listening to the record again now wasn’t actually a truly joyful happening, on the other hand it made me associate my father with Lou Reed for the first time ever and that felt weirdly good. Also, I remember very well when the LP came out 25 years ago, that British music weekly NME rewarded
it with a very rare 10/10 and that me and my mate praised Reed‘s guts to make such a difficult album while we were having a long night out – solving all world problems for the umpteenth time – in our beloved café. Mixed emotions, indeed. A sort of ‘the beauty and the beast’ feel. That’s what life is all about, I guess…

American journalist David Fricke wrote a compelling album review
for Rolling Stone Magazine back then. You can read it here .

The masterpiece in full (the only way to listen to it)…

12 January 2017

Legendary British shoegazers SLOWDIVE just released their first new song in 22 years.
In a press message singer/guitarist Neil Halstead says: “When the band decided to get back together in 2014, we really wanted to make new music. It’s taken us a whole load of shows and a few false starts to get to that point, but it’s with pride and a certain trepidation we unleash ‘Star Roving.’ It’s part of a bunch of new tracks we’ve been working on and it feels as fun, and
as relevant playing together now as it did when we first started. We hope folks enjoy it.”
Enjoy it? Wow!  STAR ROVING is absolutely mega! An overwhelming  wall of glimmering guitars floating around a catchy melody with dreamy vocals all over it. Talking about a spectacular return. Here’s the gem…

‘Strange Or Be Forgotten’ by TEMPLES

After their dazzling 2014 debut album Sun Structures, British energizing rockers TEMPLES return with new longplayer Volcano on 3 March via Fat Possum. Heavenly harmonic lead single Certainty  was already released a few months ago and now a second new track is launched. STRANGE OR BE FORGOTTEN confirms their new colourful, sonic direction. Infectious, multi-layered psych pop brilliance from start to finish, creating overall a sonic paradise that Beach Boy mastermind Brian Wilson would definitely applaud. Can’t wait to see them (again) in Brussels in two weeks time. Here’s the blissful good vibration…

SLEAFORD MODS – Join Their Boat Trip For New Track… ‘B.H.S.’

Fresh impulses for your ears…

The Mods are back with new track B.H.S. from forthcoming album English Tapas. A biting tirade on controversial British businessman Philip Green. The accompanying video was filmed on the Thames just before Christmas. Join the trip here…

The new record English Tapas will be out on 3 March. Vocalist Jason Williamson revealed the story behind the album’s tasty title: “Andrew (note TUTV: the other Mod) walked into some random pub and saw “English Tapas” scrawled on the menu board. Underneath this beautiful coupling of words were its components, half a scotch egg, cup of chips, pickle and a mini pork pie. It says everything about this fucking place. It’s comedy, it’s make do, it’s ignorant and above all, it’s shit.”

Here’s your UNIFORM for THE KILLING OF AMERICA…

‘Killing Of America’ by UNIFORM

Uniform2

Holy Fuck! New York City noisemakers UNIFORM just shared the perfect sledgehammer
to be played INSANELY LOUD at Donald Trump‘s inauguration. That utter idiot is ready for THE KILLING OF AMERICA so why not deliver that Russia controlled billionaire the proper soundtrack. Here’s the machine gun killer track that will do the trick perfectly…

The band – vocalist Michael Berdan and guitarist/producer Ben Greenberg – will release their sophomore LP, titled WAKE IN FRIGHT on 20th January. Details here on Bandcamp. “This record is primarily about psychic transition…. the distress that these songs attempt to illustrate comes from a place of stagnation and monotony. This is what happens when old ways of thinking become exhausted and old ways of coping prove ineffective. Something must change or it will break.” Berdan explains while Greenberg adds: “This music is our response to and our reflection of the overwhelming violence, chaos, hate, and destruction that confronts us and everyone else in the world every day of our lives. When we play, I don’t feel powerless anymore.
I hope this record can help others transcend their anger and frustration.”
