Waking Up With THE ROLLING STONES Featuring LADY GAGA And STEVIE WONDER And An Instant Classic

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

29 September 2023

The eternal iconic rock legends THE ROLLING STONES are quite a phenomenon.

Mick Jagger is 80, Keef Richards turns 80 in December and Ron Wood is 76 and they look in absolute great shape. But it’s not only about their cool, healthy looks at that age, they’re still terrifically active, like I witnessed last year when they played for 75.000 in Brussels on their umpteenth tour.

As already announced, they canned a new longplayer, baptized HACKNEY DIAMONDS.
It’s their 24th British and 26th American album. It lands on 20 October. Their first proper LP in 23 years, since the release of A Bigger Bang.

Following the steamy lead single Angry we get taster number 2, titled SWEET
SOUNDS OF HEAVEN
. It features Lady Gaga on vocals and Stevie Wonder on piano.

Jagger about Gaga: “She’s a really great singer and I’d never heard her sing quite that style before. Not exactly. We did it live in the room and that was a great experience, her just coming in the room and her just opening up and seeing her bits and feeling her way and then getting more confident.

About the song: “It’s all played live. And of course we did overdubs, but it’s all played in the room. Yeah, there’s that moment, especially in that session where we had Stevie, and you’re feeling your way out a little bit and then you do that soul ending, which is you do sometimes
on stage where you stop and you start.”

Sweet Sounds Of Heaven is an instant classic mixing the Stones‘ characteristic
way of writing impassioned blues-rock ballads and mixing it with sky-scraping gospel delirium (think ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’). Next to Mick Jagger‘s astonishing
vocal effort comes Lady Gaga with a wonderstruck vocal tour de force.

Really, really, really sublime. It’s a 7.22-minute diamond growing in tension and high soulful spirits along the way towards a fully orchestrated climax. If you’re a young rock band, listen and take notes. These old geezers still are masters when it comes to starting everybody up.

SUBLIME

Promo For ‘BERLIN’ Album By LOU REED – 50 Years Ago

28 September 2023

Next week, on 5 October, it will 50 years since rock ‘n’ roll animal LOU REED (1942-2013) released his 3rd LP, titled BERLIN. One of his highly applauded and critically acclaimed longplayers, following the equally astounding Transformer magnum opus the year before.

Single ‘How Do You Think It Feels‘
Great live footage from 1974

Berlin wasn’t a happy album. The record is a tragic rock opera about a doomed couple,
Jim and Caroline, living in decadent Berlin, and addresses themes of drug use, prostitution, depression, domestic violence, and suicide. No, not a happy one, but one that reflected the real, hedonistic world he was a part of in his own beloved New York City.

Conservative American critics despised the record only because
Reed wrote songs about all those things as if he glorified them.

It flopped in the US but peaked at #7 in the UK. Over the years it
became a classic in the Western world, loved by different generations.

Here the promotional poster and visual advertisement message for the media.

FREEZ – Italian Indies Tackle Fancy Fashion To Impress On Their New Electrifying And Catchy Single ‘CHANEL’

New striking strokes

28 September 2023

Band: FREEZ
Who: 4 indies from Italy. They released their debut EP Routine
back in 2018, and the following year the dropped their debut
album Always Friends.

New single: CHANEL
Piece from their upcoming, sophomore full length, named
Icebreaker, out on 27 October via Wild Honey Records.

TUTV: Catchy as hell from the get-go with sparkling guitars rotating throughout
this jangly earworm. Lyrically, “it explores the idea of wearing expensive clothes to
impress the person you are interested in, even though you are just a skint student with
no money. The song highlights the childish and superficial nature of this thought.”

Steal your father’s oldest out-of-fashion clothes, dress cool,
not fancy and play Chanel to the person you have an eye on
and see what happens.

TOY CAR – Up And Fast Coming Liverpool Mavericks Comment On Modern Life In The UK With Jackhammer ‘RAT RACE’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

28 September 2023

Promo pic

Band: TOY CAR
Who: Fervent post-punk
team from Liverpool.

Their 7-track EP named Love Those Left Behind
came out last year. Stream it here

New single: RAT RACE

“A phrase I had when writing this track was ‘to be a perfect citizen’. It has themes of the system and society as a whole but doesn’t exactly blame anyone, only observing modern life. The structure of the track is very simple, having all the meat (language) in the verses and releasing the tension in the instrumental parts with a breakdown towards the end. I felt by doing this added some sort of town crier effect , this was further reinforced by the harmonics during the instrumental parts.”

TUTV: These ambitious up-and-fast-coming Liverpool mavericks jump on the fence
to share their sharp-cutting views on the post-Brex-shit debacle. They do it with chainsaw guitars, battering drums, muscular bass, fulminating vocals and a serrated edged chorus.

The final result is a loud and clear jackhammer that makes the Sex Pistols
cry out ‘No future in England’s dreaming’, unfortunately, relevant again.

Classic Clips – ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN On Top Of The Pops With ‘NEVER STOP’ 40 Years Ago

28 September 2023

Long-time Liverpool champs ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN released a stunning
stand-alone single NEVER STOP 40 years ago (July 1983) and played it a couple
of weeks later on the legendary British music show Top Of The Pops.

Later it was included on the 2003 remastered version of their third LP Porcupine,
released in February of the same year, as well as a number of compilation albums.

Charismatic frontman and big mouth Ian McCulloch looks bored at the beginning, obviously hating playback TV performances (as so many artists do), so he starts playing
a bit with his shirt and then suddenly gets fired up in the end. Anyway Never Stop is one
of the countless top E&TB juggernauts by one of my all-time fav bands. It peaked at #15.

Measure by measure, drop by drop
And pound for pound, we’re taking stock
Of all the treasure still unlocked
The love you found must never stop

The king is dead
And long live the people who aim above

FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES Surprise With Pure Power Pop Ballad ‘MAN OF THE HOUR’

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

28 September 2023

Press photo

FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES are warming up for their new album, their fifth.
It’s baptized DARK RAINBOW and arrives on 26 January 2024. Pre-order info here

Album artwork

First single: MAN OF THE HOUR

Carter: “We talk about how rock’n’roll will never die, but we never really talk about how maybe the idea of the rock star should die. The whole concept and what it means has always been this glamorised moment, but ultimately when I put that suit on, it didn’t go very well for me. I’m just witnessing the world change so quickly and I’m still trying to come to terms with who I am and what the authentic version of me is. By giving people what I thought they wanted I think I got further and further away from who I actually am.”

TUTV: Man Of The Hour is a gorgeous surprise. Sonically and vocally we get
the softer side of post-hardcore punk and tattoo artist Carter with this pure
power ballad. Super-duper. Sing it loud.

KHOMPA – Italian Artist Combines Modern Day Techno Technology And Amazing Drum Skills With A Thunderous Impact

New striking strokes

27 September 2023

Artist: KHOMPA
Who: The solo electronic project of
Italian drummer/producer Davide Compagnoni.

His unique audiovisual live project’s main elements are: a drummer, a conventional
drum kit, 3 state-of-the-art drum sensors, a laptop and a stepsequencer. Each drum controls a virtual musical instrument (synthesizers, samplers, arpeggiators, etc.) within Ableton Live music software that, in combination with a custom stepsequencer developed with MaxforLive app, allows Khompa to perform real melodies/electronic orchestration without the use of any backing track.

Albums: The Shape Of Things To Come (2016) and Perceive Reality (2022)

New single: THE TRIGGER CONTRO TRE TIGGER

The accompanying video is a 100% live performance where all the sounds and visuals were triggered in real time with his drum kit as a reflection of the punk/chaotic/hypnotic energy of the song. In the video, words that seem to be extracted from a manifesto of perceptual dissociation bounce off the screen activated and distorted by the drum kit itself.

TUTV: Kompha‘s inventive use of modern-day technology and his amazing drum
skills are pretty special. Both combined here on new single ‘Tre Trigger Contro Tre Trigger’ leads to an overwhelming, cast-iron techno rock tour de force with a multilayered synth tsunami building a thunderous wall-of-sound, augmented with Kompha‘s stunning drum performance.

My ears also hear flashes of electro wizards The Chemical Brothers. Maybe they should
hire Kompha to add some wham-bloody-wham-bam dynamite to their razzle-dazzle pyrotechnics and make 24-hour raves popular again. Fuochi d’artificio garantiti.

Press play for a rapid-eye-movement spectacle.

Today’s Yesterday Album – ‘HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE BOOTBOYS’ – Final LP By THE AUTEURS (1999)

Remarkable albums from the past

27 September 2023

Band: THE AUTEURS (London, UK)
The musical project of musical mastermind Luke Haines

Album: HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE THE BOOTBOYS

Released: 5 July 1999 – fourth and final LP

AllMusic wrote: “The most refined of England’s bands manages to refine itself even further on their 4th disc. How ‘I Learned to Love the Bootboys’ is Luke Haines’ most immediate sounding release to date, and even though his claim that each of the record’s 12 tracks are singles sounds a bit highfalutin, he’s not far off… The cohesiveness of the record is no small feat, given the wide-ranging sounds and moods.” Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here.

TUTV: Haines designed 12 colorful stories, 12 affecting tunes, 12 compelling pop pearls.

Single/clip: The Rubettes (yes, the Sugar Baby Love group)
