Kamikaze Punk Bolide AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS Bombed ANTWERP Last Night…

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS – Het Bos, Antwerp, Belgium – 11 June 2019

THE BAND
A non-stop volcanic rawk & roll bolide from down under, led by the charismatic and the stormy frontwoman Amyl Taylor. An uproarious Melbourne based punk turbine everybody is talking about right now. Imagine a lethal cocktail of The Runaways (Joan Jett‘s teenage band) and metallic fury Plasmatics (with the legendary Wendy O. Williams) fueled by an eruptive Motörhead drive. Final result: hot-tempered, neurotic and fiery pandemonium!

THE ALBUM
The band released their self-titled firework debut album last May. A boiling record filled with 70s influenced blitzkrieg jackhammers that drive you totally out-of-your-mind and want you to smash your head against the wall. Check the insane heat out right here…

British Hellish Rockers SAINT AGNES Kicked Belgium In The Face With Satanic Blues Force

SAINT AGNES – Kinky Star Club, Ghent, Belgium – 14 May 2019

To be honest, before seeing this 4-headed British blues-rock psych monster called SAINT AGNES last Tuesday Turn Up The Volume! had no idea of the existence of this awesome, dazzling rawk engine. But NOW I KNOW more! One: the band is named after “the patron saint of girls, virginity and chastity, who was martyred at the age of 13 in AD 304.“. Two: this group worked their sweaty asses off for several years to shape their sizzling sound, live and on record. Three: two weeks ago these dirty devils released their crushing debut longplayer WELCOME TO SILVERTOWN. Trust me… it’s A BOILING KILLER RECORD!
And this sledgehammer is one of the many bang-up highlights…

Now back to Tuesday. When SAINT AGNES started their set with the above jackhammer ‘The Death Or Glory Gang‘, your awakened mind instantly knew, your shaking body instantly felt and your sped up stream of adrenalin instantly signaled that you witnessed something really HEAVY AND HUGE. It seemed at first like this firm furious foursome wanted to crush you ‘right now, right here‘. Their mammoth power and towering energy had an immediate impact on all of your senses from the get-go.

Luckily for us, they just continued to steamroll madly and wildly as if this wasn’t the first but the last gig of their European tour. Firework key members Kitty Austen (vocals/guitar & keys) and Jon James Tufnell (vocals/guitar) sucked up all the visual and aural attention with their unstoppable tsunami of bloodthirsty guitar uppercuts and nastily screaming vocals while a merciless drum/bass tandem kept the merciless beat going on in the back. WHAM BLOODY WHAM BAM! As flamboyant as the kooky New York Dolls, as tempestuous as the burning The Black Crowes and as fucked-up as the two desperadoes of Royal Trux. Yes that viciously good.

It’s only the month of May but I’m sure this FUCKING RED-HOT PSYCH-O-DELIC BLUES ROCK TORNADO SHOW will be on Turn Up The Volume‘s best-2019-gigs list. The absentees were wrong, those present are all devoted disciples now of this bewitching holiness…

Belgian Hell-Raising Grunge Force PEUK Smashes All Your Demons…

PEUK – Nosta Club, Opwijk, Belgium – 1 May 2019

Great news for all those mortals among us who feel like being chased by their worst nightmares, for those who think that deranged dynamics drive them crazy, for those
who have no clue how to ventilate their hellish anger, for those who think their soul is confiscated by evil powers and for those who can’t control their fucked up minds.

Just listen to Belgium’s kamikaze trio PEUK, led by the young awesome frontwoman Nele. This crushing 3-headed steamroller can solve all your psychic problems as long as you’re ready to sell your soul to them and open the front door of your messed-up mind in order to absorb Nele‘s insane and exorcistic primal screams – the range of her voice is beyond normality – and the surrounding hell-raising grunge assaults. It’s not the first time Turn Up The Volume! witnessed PEUK going entirely bananas. It’s like experiencing Armageddon time! Ominous, doomy and tumultuous. And LOUD enough to smash all of your demons. Hell yeah! Here’s a deafening idea of their red-hot-blooded force…

Do Believe The Hype! Last Night Dublin’s FONTAINES D.C. Played A Blistering Set In Belgium…

FONTAINES D.C. – 4AD Club, Diksmuide, Belgium – 19 April 2019

The much-lauded and hot-blooded young gang from Dublin, Ireland hit
Belgium to play a blistering gig. Here are 10 things you need to know…

1. Yesterday morning I read about these Irish rockers on music website NME: “You do need to see them ASAP” (full feature here.) As I am an obedient man I immediately went out and witnessed them in our historic World War I village of Diksmuide (but not for the first time, that was last year when they impressed Brussels).

2. This was a rescheduled gig. The band’s November 2018 concert here in this utterly cool 4AD club had to be canceled because singer Grian Chatten was sick. Despite their current, endless night-to-night tour they sacrificed a rare day off to return to Belgium last night and play. Respect!

3. The show started with a smashing rendition of my favorite Fontaines cracker ‘Hurricane Laughter’. Did you ever get that should I stay or should I go feeling after a band/artist began the set with your favorite track. I remember vaguely having had that experience before, but definitely not this time, not with this awesome squad.

4. Charismatic frontman Grian Chatten revealed in a recent interview that his parlando
way of singing was inspired by his uncles shouting at Christmas dinners and their drunk voices sounding commanding and authoritarian. That’s the way to get anybody’s attention. Cool family, Grian!

5. Another thing about Chatten. He’s actually the only member of the band who moves on stage. His non-stop manic steps from left to right and back compensates for his immobile teammates perfectly well. Makes me think suddenly of early Oasis gigs I saw. Nobody, not even Liam moved when performing. Anyway, Fontaines‘ live force strikes you like a sizzling missile, who cares if they move or not. Here’s an idea of their magnetic energy…

6. I bought this t-shirt. My wife said: “It looks like a piece of textile from the 50s.
My reply: “It’s reproduced authenticity from the past.” Yes, life is controlled by
perception… all the time.

7. Two members of the band took charge of selling the merch afterward. Can’t see that happen anymore in the near future as the group will play bigger venues along their way
to glorious fame.

8. D.C. = Dublin City

9. Striking set… list

10. Believe the hype. These young gunslingers rock like an unstoppable steamroller, on record and on stage, and their sociopolitical observations cut like a Swiss knife. Check it
all out on their brand new debut album, called DOGREL right here…

LE BUTCHERETTES Produce Non-Stop Explosive Mexican Waves – Live In Belgium…

LE BUTCHERETTES – Charlatan Club, Ghent, Belgium – 4 April 2019

My, oh my! Mexican rockers LE BUTCHERETTES’ frontwoman and mastermind Teresa Suarez-Coscio aka Teri Gender Bender is one hell of a breathtaking performer. Every nerve and every muscle in her non-stop dynamizing body is on hyperactive modus while I’m sure you could hear her exorcistic primal screams on the other side of the city. Just astonishing! She’s a red-hot-blooded mix of Polly Harvey, Karen O and Siouxsie Sioux.

The year is still young but this is, the most supercalifragilisticexpialidocious show, Turn Up The Volume witnessed so far in 2019. Backed by a perfectly well-oiled band operating like an unstoppable hot rod Bender gave us a dazzling live session of almost all of the tracks of their new (fourth) excellent, multi-faceted and turbulent album bi/Mental. A steamy and inflammable cocktail of post-punk dynamics, Gothic grandeur, hard-rockin’ electricity and sizzling electro waves turned into a relentless firework on stage with Bender‘s inexhaustible intensity and vitalizing vehemence leaving you behind in/THE END with a sweaty body, a sped up heartbeat and totally out of breath. Fantástico! Formidable! Fenomenal!

Here’s a visual idea of LE BUTCHERETTES’ awe-inspiring presence on stage…

TOY Overwhelms BRUSSELS With Monumental Streams Of Psychedelic Waves…

TOY – Witlof Bar (Botanique), Brussels – 22 February 2019

Last month Brighton‘s psychedelic pop collective TOY released their glowing, critically acclaimed, 4th LP HAPPY IN THE HOLLOW. Their most engrossing achievement so far. The amazing thing about this band is that you can enjoy them in two truly different ways. On record, their songs have an overall atmospheric, bluesy and mind-exploring resonance and are best experienced on your headphones, late at night with the lights out and the world asleep. On stage the whole Toy dynamic changes drastically. The decibels go up
(way up actually), the intensity rises to an overwhelming level, the motorik drum/bass beats speed up your bloodstream and the intoxicating streams of hallucinatory waves touch you really physically.

Yes, every nerve and every muscle in your whole body moves in overdrive, especially when they switch to exhilarating jam modus on their classic oldies ‘Join The Dots’, ‘Motoring’ and most of all the monumental ‘Dead And Gone’, but the trance-like treatment works perfectly too for the steamy rippers ‘Jolt Awake‘, ‘Mechanism’ and ‘Energy’ off the new LP. During their more relaxed twilight meditations (‘Mistake A Stranger‘, ‘The Willo‘ and ‘Last Warmth Of The Day‘) you could catch your breath again but to be honest, every time they slowed down
I (and the crowd) couldn’t hardly wait to get the next electro Krautrock shock, to absorb the next guitars charged crescendo extravaganza and to lose ourself in the next glorious cacophony. Third time I saw TOY! Third time they nailed it and my ears still buzzing 15 hours later are proof of that! Memorable performance!

Nevermind Nirvana Here’s Sonic Trash Youth… PEUK

PEUK – Charlatan, Ghent, Belgium – 25 January 2019

After a series of rip-roaring gigs last year and an explosive EP, it was crystal clear why rowdy Belgian newcomers PEUK, a blusterous in your face trio led by youthful primal screamer and emotive songwriter Nele became the talk of the town. Remember Sonic Youth? Remember Nirvana? Remember early Hole? Well, Peuk is a scorching three-headed dragon combining all the mad rage, blazing anger and reality anxiety those
three aforementioned bands were adored for by troubled hearts & souls worldwide.

Yesterday the band released their self-titled, blistering debut LP and played a glorious
big bang gig in Turn Up The Volume‘s hometown to celebrate the newborn. As well live
as on record this noisy threesome’s intensity equals a fire-spewing volcano with psychic problems. Mental conditions such as exorcism, catharsis and soul-purification come to mind when you see Nele giving it all in her zone of her own on the stage. Totally arresting! Fully bewitching! Smells like blood-curdling teen spirit. Here’s an idea of Peuk Live

And what about their debut album, I hear you ask.
Here are the keywords: Melodic trash / Barbed wire punk / Riotous grunge / Fierce body-piercing howls / Kim Gordon’s coolness / Courtney’s sneering and spitting / Mind-crashing drums / Furious bass / Fast slow / Quit, loud / Clamorous tumult / Emotional outbursts.

With all that information, you’re
sonically armed to meet the beast.
Kick out the jams right here…

SHAME Shake Up Freezing Brussels With Scream Along Songs Of Praise…

SHAME – Ancienne Belgique, Brussels – 13 December 2018

It was freezing cold in the heart of Brussels last Thursday, but South London‘s blazing noisemakers SHAME, along with Bristol‘s fury Idles and Irish turbine Fontaines D.C.
part of a new punk generation that hits big time, provided enough red-hot fuel to keep
the pogoing spectators fired-up from the mighty explosive Dust On Trail & Concrete start onwards. Led by sneering and spitting frontman Charlie Steen, who had his first crowd
surf halfway the second song, the band rushed through their one-hour shake-up set like
a crushing steamroller on speed, despite the fact that this gig was their 162nd of 2018.

Their smashing songs of praise (except for three new ones) were screamed out loud, word by word by the pumped up fans. Tons of energy, tons of confidence, tons of anthems, tons of riffs and rage is what this Brixton gang is all about and they’ve only started. Hell bloody hell yeah! Here’s a smoking idea of Shame‘s manic live presence…

Psychedelic Pop Magicians THE FLAMING LIPS Caused Massive Screams Of Joy In AMSTERDAM…

THE FLAMING LIPS – Melkweg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands – 11 November 2018

Early 2017 Oklahoma‘s psychedelic pop orchestra THE FLAMING LIPS blew my and many others’ heads off in Antwerp, Belgium with their sensational and spectacular phantasy show – full review right here. Yesterday the impressive ‘all you need is love‘ symphonic magicians did it again at the fabulous and utterly cosy 1500-cap Melkweg in rainy Amsterdam.

Although it was, visually and aurally, a similar performance as last year, my experience this time was totally overwhelming as I witnessed the whole extravaganza from the very front-line and also the cutting impact on your adrenalin’s flow of whatever happened anywhere at anytime last night was so direct and intense because of the intimate structure of this warmly brilliant small-sized venue. Encouraged constantly by the tireless Wayne Coyne, the incomparable and highly emotional Maestro of The Lips Spectacle the raving crowd screamed of joy for the whole mind-boggling journey. You really had to be there, in the heat of the moment, to fully feel the unstoppable stream of ecstasy. Hail to The Flaming Lips. Thanks, again, for 2 hours of mesmerizing magic! I’m still on a cloud while writing.

Here are some pictures from last night’s fireworks
