Roaring Female Blues Punk Tsunami BOYTOY Turned Up The Decibels In Belgium….

12 May 2018

Wham bloody bam! Holy cow! Hell bloody yeah! Out of Brooklyn, NY came three-headed punk rock turbine, called BOYTOY to play and impress Belgium as part of PSYCH OVER 9000 FESTIVAL . in my hometown Ghent, last Thursday. To be honest, I never heard of
this red-hot trio before, but now, after their smashing show I will never forget them. So who are these badass ladies? Their record label says: “Boytoy a summer-time strut down
a New York City sidewalk as the sun slips behind the horizon where cement meets the shore
and waves crash on the pavement. Their sound ebbs and flows between natural harmony
and destruction—embodying the bright grooves of the 1960’s with heavy guitar riffs
snatched from the Lower East Side of the 1970’s.”

Loud! Filthy! Hungry! Thunderous! Plain-spoken! Sexy! Sensual! Rowdy! Thrashy! Bluesy! Heated! Exciting! Hefty! Sweaty! Scorching! Hammering! Cracking! Pounding! Clamorous! This is how this mean badass punk rock machine sounded and looked like and made them the absolute highlight of this splendid town festival. This 2017 live footage will give you an idea of the band’s dynamic impact, burning live energy and hot-blooded presence…

And here’s the trio’s brand new, pretty poppy
and relaxing, 2nd album NIGHT LEAF

IT IT ANITA – Belgian Noiseniks On Their Way To New Sonic Adventures…

IT IT ANITA – Les Nuits Botanique Festival – 6 May 2018

Dedicated followers of this blog know that Turn Up The Volume‘s ears and eyes get tremendously excited when IT IT ANITA, flamboyant noise junks out of Liege, Belgium
hit the stage. Which they did yesterday on the closing night of Les Nuits Botanique Festival in Brussels. Sandwiched between metallic noise duo The Body and Danish
post-punk hype Iceage (what a disappointment) the band stuffed their 40-minute
set, except for a couple of golden hammer oldies, with new songs. First impression regarding the fresh stuff: surprising, adventurous, intriguing, trippy and compelling.
It’s quite clear that this impressive quartet doesn’t want to repeat itself all over again.
It’s not that IIAA became an arty farty avant-garde jazz combo overnight, luckily not,
but this kick-ass 4-piece definitely wants to explore new sonic areas. We will obviously
need more listens of the new material to really see/hear the whole picture, but this
gig was certainly a loud and clear signal that a fascinating fresh longplayer is waiting
in the pipeline to be released in September. Until then let’s all go berserk to brand
new, clamorous single Another Canceled Mission

Blistering Dublin Tornado FONTAINES D.C. Impressed Brussels With Smashing Performance…

FONTAINES D.C. – Les Nuits Botanique Festival, Brussels – 4 May 2018

Last March Turn Up The Volume discovered this up and strongly coming Irish gang FONTAINES D.C. with the release of their hair-risings single Chequeless Reckless.
A paranoid post-punk-punch activated by manic drums and resounding guitars while singer Grian Chatten spitting and sneering in a frenzied Mark E. Smith way, word by word, syllable by syllable. So I was pretty curious to see if these outspoken youngsters could translate their rip-roaring grit and grinta on a podium. Oh my, oh my! This mean Dublin machine rumbled, thundered and stormed like a relentless sonic tornado. They nailed it big time in a dazzling 35-minute set, getting big compliments afterwards from the two mind-splitting headliners of the night, punk madmen Idles and metallic monsters Metz. Trust me, Fontaines D.C.‘s future looks pretty ace! Their hammering in-your-face drones activate your limbs instantly while young, agitated and charismatic frontman Grian Chatten is the magnetic eye-catcher in the middle. His body language and physical looks reminded me (and many other spectators) of – YES – the late, great icon Ian Curtis . Highly intriguing and irresistibly hypnotic. I guess you get the picture by now. This is a band for the future. Tremendously exciting and cuttingly outspoken. The following two smacks will definitely convince you why I’m going totally euphoric about this gloriously explosive turbo…

Gloomy Melancholia At Its Nostalgic Best With An Eight ‘INSECURE MEN’ Orchestra In Brussels…

INSECURE MEN – Botanique, Brussels – 27 April 2018

INSECURE MEN is a new musical project formed by lifelong friends Saul Adamczewski (guitarist/songwriter for the most fascinating band in ages: Fat White Family) and Ben Romans-Hopcraft (frontman of London’s indie popsters Childhood). With both having
a variety of difficult personal experiences (hopefully) behind them the pair recorded and released a gripping don’t look back in anger longplayer. Produced by Sean Lennon (yes, the son of…) this gripping self-titled debut is to the heavy-hearted side of my ears a first-rate achievement. Gloomy melancholia at its very best. A captivating melting pot of cynicism injected stories drenched in highly affecting retro pop orchestrations. Romantic Wurlitzer tunes for 50s ballrooms with young, insecure people looking for much-needed attention on the dance floor. Something like this sweet little gem…

Last Friday the band – actually an orchestra of eight including a sultry saxophonist and
a teenage-looking pedal steel guitarist – hit Brussels. They translated, after a rather slow start, the weirdly glamorous and smoothly catchy feel of the album just perfectly onto the stage. At times this concert felt like an intimate campfire-like gathering in some dark alley of a big city with sticky sing along musings as nostalgic as the old-fashioned design of most of the band’s suits. As we all know, vulnerable and heartbreaking romanticism is timeless and ageless. The crowd, ranging from 16 to 60 years old, was into it until the very end when all present clapped and swayed along to darksome lullaby closer ‘Burried In The Bleak’ after Saul‘s hot shower in ‘Whitney Houston and I‘. It was good to see the once-troubled frontman smile again…

Darkwave Turbine ‘KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND’ Inflamed The City Of Ghent With Gothic Punk Smacks…

KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND – Kinky Star – 5 April 2018

KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is the title of a macabre comic book with the story written by Grant Morrison. It’s also an Italian trio of shattering Goth punks sounding like Sisters
Of Mercy
on speed instead of Valium, like The Jesus And mary Chain with crashing slams instead of pop tunes, like Joy Division losing control completely. The band was formed
back in 2011 by Matteo Scarpa on (guitar, vocals) and spectacular drummer Antonio Angeli Yesterday this two-headed turbine, assisted by a thumping bassist, produced a non-stop eruption of mind-boggling darkwave hullabaloo. Hair-raising, deafening, tons of piercing feedback and bloody entertaining overall. Their sonic shit navigates perfectly between all post-punk clichés. Their razor blade havoc covers several decades, but you can’t really label them, which proves that this squad moves in a dark zone of their own. Hallelujah! Here’s an idea of their inflammable act…

THE GLÜCKS – Supersonic Starfighters Cause Earthquake On Album Release Night…

THE GLÜCKS – Charlatan Club, Ghent (Belgium) – 23 March 2018

What the hell happened last night in my hometown Ghent?
Was it a sonic tsunami? An ear-deafening tornado? A kick-ass rollercoaster? A smacking whirlwind? A terrific thunderstorm? A hellish hallucination? An electric chair experience?
A fucking Nightmare on Elm Street? The Ostend Chain Saw Massacre? Or the Tina Witch Project featuring Alex Kreuger? It was all this and much more. It was that two-headed machine-gun beast called… THE GLÜCKS

What were these misfits actually doing?
It was the release night of their second longplayer titled RUN AMOK. A filthy animal
of a record resonating at times as if it was recorded by a schizophrenic Manga army with paranoid problems. Yet, on first hearing, this new baby sounds more versatile and more melodic than their full-length debut detonation. But I need a couple of more spins to fully absorb all the new firecrackers, brick by brick. And so should you. It’s a lot cheaper than therapy…

Hammering Tina...

Riff Junk Alex

What about the audience?
Totally committed to the new shit from the turbulent start to the explosive finish! Bodies flew around as if it was a human air show for wackos. Heads pirouetted uncontrollably while a wall of decibels crashed the sound system without mercy and on repeat. Crack! Boom! Wham! Damn! Bam! Walls got wet because of the tropic heat. Sweat streamed
non-stop, adrenalin streamed non-stop and beer streamed non-stop while psychedelic images on a screen behind the band caused rapid-eye-movement in the crowd. You get the picture, ladies and gents? The Cramps are the Devilish-Psycho-Masters Of Slam-Garage-Billy and these two rambunctious misfits, Hammering Tina & Riff Junk Alex, are without a shadow of a doubt their coolest apostles. HAIL HAIL… THE GLÜCKS

Starry-Eyed Electro Disciples ‘RUMOURS’ Shine Gloriously In World Famous Cathedral In Ghent Belgium…

RUMOURS – St. Jacob’s Church, Ghent, Belgium – 14 March 2018

RUMOURS is an up and coming 2-girls/2-boys electro force out of Belgium taking a giant step on their sonic journey with their first full length record. They describe their music as “pitch dark Shaman-hop and obscure cold with a frisking rustle, veiled by an oppressively dark sample-web.” If you never heard of them capture their gloomy fever right here…

It was last week that their highly atmospheric debut album, titled rightly MEGAMIX, saw the light of day. A magnificent and magnetizing work of transcendent soundscapes. And last night the quartet staged their LP release show in one of Ghent‘s massive churches…

And on the 7th day God created St. Jacob’s Church for RUMOURS’ album release show

A most fitting choice for their monumental sound, ranging from grand symphonies to mighty bass-loaded-synths drones. From twilight vibrations to battering reverberations. From heaven to hell and back, with frontgirl Hannah‘s angelic and lively voice as the band’s most impressive instrument. What an elevating and soul-catching vox! Hallelujah! I guess you already know by now that this wasn’t a regular concert. Not at all, it was a spiritual happening, in sound as well as in vision. What about the quality of the sound in such a gigantic space I hear you ask? Perfect, just perfect. The sound-mixer(s) did a supernatural job in this grand, holy building. Add the dazzling display of a tremendously matching light spectacle and what the audience experienced was a unique event that satisfied all of their senses. A mystical trip in many ways. God bless Rumours!…

LIAM GALLAGHER Brings OASIS Back To Live In Brussels With A Godlike Genius Set….

LIAM GALLAGHER – Ancienne Belgique Venue, Brussels – 7 March 2018

NME’s 2018 Godlike Genius LIAM GALLAGHER hit Brussels yesterday with one crystal clear intention: making the crowd (with countless Brits who crossed the channel) sing to OASIS classics from the explosive start (Rock ‘n’ Roll Star after the smashing ‘Fuckin’ In The Bushes‘ intro ) to the euphoric end (Live Forever) and many other timeless Oasis rippers in between (Some Might Say / (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? / Slide Away / Supersonic / Cigarettes And Alcohol / Be Here Now…). I saw the Manchester legends 27 times, and this was the 27 1/2 time. Yes, the bearded Gallagher played it safe and he got away with it big time. An ecstatic audience made this concert sound like a UEFA champions league finale. Ninety minutes of glorious rhapsody and non-stop loudly chants. Oh yes, he also played tracks (five actually) from his solo debut album with ‘Wall Of Glass’, ‘Paper Crown’ and ‘For What It’s Worth’ fitting perfectly into the set. But in his heart Liam was, is and always will be the charismatic vox of Oasis! The parka man accomplished his mission once again: he made us all feel like rock ‘n’ roll stars! Live forever, Liam!…
