One-Woman-Band WHERE WE SLEEP Hypnotises Again With New Bass-Riff Driven Single ‘BROKEN BONES’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

25 August 2022

Artist: WHERE WE SLEEP (London, UK)
Who: Alter ego of Beth Rettig, former
front force of electro rock band Blindness

New single: BROKEN BONES

It follows the hypnotic, ambient 5-track EP Experiments In The Dark (2019)
and soul-stirring debut album The Scars They Leave (2021)

Turn Up The Volume: This is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most tantalizing tracks Beth Rettig wrote/recorded in her musical journey. A slow-mo reflection on personal turmoil, driven by a repetitive bass-riff that got under my skin and kept on rotating in my head after just one spin. And when she adds psychedelic guitar pizazz and flashy fingertip touches, the bone-chilling progression gets even more poignant.

Beth Rettig‘s shadowy vocality seduces once again. To hypnotise, magnetise and mesmesize are familiar Where We Sleep characteristics I never get tired of.

The accompanying video is fully arresting. It visualizes the song’s ominous vibe and
Beth‘s utterly cool presence (she just looks drop-dead gorgeous, partly rocker, partly
ancient goddess) perfectly. Subtle and eye-impressing, inventive and showy. Finally,
a clip that doesn’t attack your pupils with a tsunami of shots and arty farty effects, but sticks with the essence of the song and the artist’s spirit.

Broken Bones is a triumph in sound and vision.

Who doesn’t like making all sorts of (play)lists?

I do. Best of lists, end-of-the-year lists, golden oldies lists,
only family lists, guilty pleasure song lists, summer lists,
brand new song lists. Okay, stop, I think I made my point.

Today: BLOC PARTY

The London post-punk-pop band orchestrated by Kele Okereke.
released 6 albums so far (with 2 different line-ups), with this year’s
Alpha Games as the most recent one.

Upcoming… New BILL CALLAHAN Album

25 Augustus 2022

Notable American singer-songwriter BILL CAHALLAN started his career under his alias of Smog. From 2008 on he operates under his Christian name. Overall he made 19 albums and number 20 is on its way. It’s named YTI⅃AƎЯ.

Callahan: “I wanted to make a record that addressed or reflected the current climate. It felt like it was necessary to rouse people — rouse their love, their kindness, their anger, rouse anything in them. Get their senses working again. I guess there was already plenty of anger! But we needed a better anger. To get out of this hypnagogic state. Hypnagogic rage. Disassociated rage that destroys the community and leaves only the individual eating themselves alive instead of feeding others. We were born to feed others. We have milk, breasts. We have language, tongues. We have music, ears. All to feed.”

YTI⅃AƎЯ is out 10/14/22 digitally and 2/24/23 physically. Pre-order info here.

THE DEADSTOCK 33s And BRIX SMITH Go Tubular On New Psychedelic Move And Groove Jam

Daily electricity to load your batteries

24 Augustus 2022

Artists: THE DEADSTOCK 33s and BRIX SMITH

Who: The alias of underground producer/DJ, artist Justin Robertson with
over 30 years’ experience as an innovator and restless proponent of fascinating
forward-thinking electronic dance music, and Mark E Smith‘s widow who played
with The Fall from 1983-1989, and from 1994-1996.

New single: BRIX GOES TUBULAR
Title track from the upcoming 4-track EP
on September 23rd.

The track’s artwork

Justin Robertson: “We wanted to capture the spaciousness of a distant beach as the surf rolled in and the sound of a rider in the tube of the wave. The wide-open palette of dub and particularly the vibe of Compass Point was very much our touchstone. There are hints of the Tom Tom Club in there too, for good measure”.

Brix Smith: “I’ve always longed to collaborate with Justin, who can manipulate sound in a
very different way than myself. He is a magician who creates dimension transcending sonic atmospheres. The metaphor of surfing came to me instantly when I first heard the track.
Surfing is a dynamic physical and spiritual experience. You are ‘in tune’ with Mother Nature”.

TUTV: This ongoing electro-house throbbing is what your hips need to prolong the summer feeling. Tubular is a relaxing mid-tempo jam with a Jah Wobble-like dub rhythm.

You can move and groove to it alone, with your partner, or in a club looking for a partner, or while surfing on the nearest river, actually anywhere you want to chill out and go tubular and nuclear with this surprising but perfectly matching duo.

Sultry stroke.

COURTNEY BARNETT & SLEATER-KINNEY & FRED ARMISEN Get Physical

To honor OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN, who passed away on 8 August
at the age of 73, following along severe battle against breast cancer,
veteran Riot Grrls Sleater-Kinney, Aussie songstress Courtney Barnett
and American actor/comedian Fred Armisen teamed up at a festival
in Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington, a couple of days ago.

They performed her massive 1981 hit PHYSICAL. It became a lively celebration
of the late superstar. Almost everybody with hairbands (as in Olivia’s sweaty video
of back then). S-K’s Corin Tucker did the vocals and the ONJ gym dance with
Fred Armisen.

Puzzling Band MOUNT FOREL Launch New Puzzling Video For Their Puzzling Single ‘CENTRALIA SCEPTICS CLUB’

24 August 2022

Band: MOUNT FOREL
Who: International post-punk team based in London

New single/video: CENTRALIA SCEPTICS CLUB

The single’s great artwork

This puzzling band have their 2nd album, baptized Sub Rosa Stories coming soon.
It features an uneasy group of secret symphonic modern tales. Each petal that falls
from the rose tells a story of chaos and consequence from somewhere in the world. Sounds weird, ominous and… totally cool.

Centralia Sceptics Club is a taster of what to expect.

“There’s a fire that’s been burning under the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania
for over 50 years and may continue for another 250! It started as a waste dump
fire before spreading to the coal mine under the town. Centralia used to be a town
of 1,200 people but now only a handful remain and although there’s toxic fumes
and smoke coming from cracks in the ground, the last few refuse to leave, even
after the local government offered to rehouse them!”

Musically it’s a psychedelic wall-of-electrifying-sound jam. A transcendent trip towards
a dark place. As ska icons The Specials once sang “ This town is coming like a ghost town.“. This is the idea. Eerie stuff.

The accompanying video is as spooky and puzzling as the song. Do you know the 60s hit This Wheel’s On Fire, Rolling Down The Road by Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll? That’s the spirit here…

Last Saturday British volcanic post-punks SHAME turned the big tent at Pukkelpop Fest (Belgium) into a heatwave sauna. Sweat all over the place. Their steamy-red-blooded set confirmed once more that they’re one of the hottest live bands (as I experienced before) on this fucked-up planet.

A sign left from the stage stated: No Crowd Surfing
